Canon LTM Bulk film leaders for QL17GIII?

I've had a problem with film jamming for a while now with my QL17GIII, but only with bulk film (not retail film). It seems that no matter how try try to cut the leader, it always manages to stop advancing the film after anywhere from 4-15 frames. Instead, I work the advance, and the film doesn't move, but apparently the spindle is still spinning (which also badly scratches the film that's wound).

Has anyone else run into this problem? With my old Canonet 28, I could cut the leader however I pleased, as long as it wouldn't rip under tension and it fit into the slot.
 
I can only report that with my QL17GIII I am able to cut the leader however I please. Maybe you would like to have it.

I'm with the others. I think something's wrong with your camera. I cut my bulk film at an angle, avoiding the sprocket holes, and my Canonet QL17 GIII never choked. The QL (Quick Load) system should be able to handle a large variety of cuts.

Perhaps I should mention that when it slips, I need a ton of force to move it. Usually though, I rewind a bit and try to advance past that part again, but it always jams up at the same point.

I took some dummy film and advanced until it jammed, and then opened it up. It seems that it's not winding tight enough, and the spindled film grows to a size too big way too fast, and that's when it jams.

It's been doing this since my 2nd roll of film ever in this camera. Thankfully that was just some fooling around, and nothing serious (or good, for that matter).

How would a Fed w/ a 50 1.7(ish) stack up against the QL17GIII? It'll be a lot heavier and bigger for sure, I can get it for 100 at my local camera shop.

What lens would that be? I'm not aware of any 50mm FSU lens made with that aperture. 100USD is quite a lot to pay for that package, unless its some sort of rare prototype lens.

Feds are generally meterless, or come with dead selenium meters. In any case they probably won't be as sensitive or accurate as the one on your QL17GIII.
 
Oh. That's disappointing. I was just guessing about the lens too. I wasn't intending to use the built-in meter anyways.

I've also noticed that I can feed my Canonet all the TMax 400 and 100 it wants, but Plus-X and HP5 jam up nearly every roll.

I'm starting large format at school right now though, so most of my film shooting (and darkroom work) is devoted to that right now. My rangefinder (loaded with TMax now) still travels with me during the day though🙂. I'll experiment with the straight leader with my dummy film after I finish this roll.
 
Sounds like to me there is something wrong with the film. Funny that it's only binding up on your bulk film. Maybe the sprocket holes are uneven. Have you checked that out. I have naver heard of this but I guess anythings possable. Have you tried any of your bulk film in a different camera? Also when cutting bulk film it's best to round the corners and don't cut across the sproket holes. This keeps small pieces of film from breaking off and getting into the cameras mechnisms. You probably know most of this but thought i'd throw in my 2 cents worth. Good luck with the QL.

A search would have turned up me asking this a year or two back 🙂
I found what you describe, and the sprocket holes would tear when I tried to
force it. This only happened on bulk-loaded film. It happened in different ways on different cameras. On my Canon EOS bodies, they assume they are at the end of the film and rewind.

The problem is that it is too stiff to wind the film out of the bulk-load canister. I solved this by rubbing a candle-end on the outer flanges of the canister to lubricate turning of the spindle. Havn't had the problem since. I'm using the AP plastic bulk-load canisters BTW.

It must be a perfect tension then. My two Minolta SLRs can advance the bulk film perfectly at 4 and 5 FPS, at least so far. I'll try the candlestick lubrication on all my rolls from here on out.

I'll join the others that say there's got to be something odd with your particular Canonet. I've never experienced this issue with any of the Canonets I've owned, although I am very mindful of how I cut my own spooled film's lead.

I can't think of a reason why you'd have this problem.
