A full weeks stay is one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences that most people will ever have.
If a person goes just for the weekend of The Burn then it is one helluva 20,000 person strong party.

Not viewing this as a 'photography' trip, but will have a few cameras along. Doing a stop motion / time lapse project. Plan to get LOW and take some shots from ground level.

one amazing aspect is all of the craftsmanship that goes into the various art pieces and installations...especially when you take into account that it's all built to be experienced during the week of Burning Man, and then torn back down when it's over. then they'll do it again next year...and none of it will be the same. transcendental ephemera on a grand scale.

I haven't been there. A friend invited me to go with her this year. I planned on it but just didn't invest time in getting prepared. I finally admitted to myself (and her) in May that I wasn't going to make it.
I hope she goes again next year. I would like to do it and it would be much more fun going with people who have experience out there.

Offloaded the memory cards last night. Brought the RD1s but it never left the case. Only used 1 battery in the LX3, one battery in the 5D (for stop motion, didn't do as much as planned), and two cards and <3 batteries for the M9. Will have a few public images to share.
Idea of keeping photography as a 2nd or lower priority was a success, even went out one day/night sans camera. A number of people handed me their cameras that day, not that my shots are any better..
Looking through the images quickly, the plan to GET LOW was a good one, and should have done that even more! (built a little 3" tripod base for the M9).
There was so much color everywhere that I'll probably process most as color images.

Absolutely RichL, thanks for starting the thread. By the second day photography took a distant back seat to the experience.
A few more from the first night, walking the Playa. One might see a small light or silhouette in the distance and head that direction. In this case to find a tall welded sculpture that was a favorite this year.
She was covered with a metal mesh, towering above the burners admiring her shape

I thought of Keith here when I saw this 'ole portrait wagon. The red lines behind are the temple, which burned on Sunday, one day after the man.

Dawn is a special time for many burners, and I was happy to have seen every sunrise.
Here a giant smoke ring was launched to the sky, taking perhaps 30 seconds to form and rise. It could be seen for miles.
The relative close distance led to exploration of the installation as the sun worked its way to the horizon.
Four smoke ring charges in canisters as tall as I..
(note - this was shot w/ the 2" base-pod made up to help get LOW)

Oh. My. God. That looks like such an incredible experience! My wife and I have been talking about going to BurningMan for ten years, but never gotten much past talking about it. We'll have to change that. 🙂

Bobby, it was incredible indeed. I talked about it for a few years, and this year it just came together. Camped with 3 of my best friends and a couple new ones. There were both BM veterans and virgins in our group. Met so many nice people.
One thing that is just incredibly awesome is the strong culture around MOOP.
MOOP = Matter Out Of Place (a.k.a. - litter).
Leave No Trace.
Carry a moop bag or tin with you every day.
Please note how clean the Playa is in these shots - it is not chance, but rather there is a deep and strong conscious force maintaining the litter-free aesthetics of Black Rock City, be it on the Playa or in the camps.

Here are a few of Amanda that I need to send along. The notion of getting the camera low to the ground worked well with the large flat area of the playa. It made for interesting silhouettes and scale elements in the distance.
Perhaps leveling the horizon and lowering it a bit in the next image would be good. Need an adjustable base as well for different focal lengths.
versus the typical perspective of camera at eye-level.
