about a week ago, on kijiji, a mint nikon 85/1.8 popped up and at a price i was willing to pay. i immediately sent off an email saying i would take it.
seller emailed me back...the lens was sold already.
seller turned out to be a local pro that i once knew, we chatted a bit and i asked him about a 24/2.8...he had a mint one, not sure he wanted to sell it.
today i made a trade for an 85/1.8 nikkor (and some cash) for my cv 28...sans the value added extras...i think we're both happy...
today, i also got an email from my old aqaintance saying the 24 was mine if i wanted it.
a good nikon day...i now have my complete set of nikon prime lenses for my d90.
and i just might have someone (local) who is interested in my nikon 28...which the 24 will be replacing...
the lineup for my nikon...17/24/40 micro/50/85

Joe, did you get the AF 85? I have that lens and its very sharp and has pretty good bokeh for a nikon lens.

yeah, the older af-d 85...it looks damn sharp from looking at flickr shots...and i don't believe in bokeh so i'm ok with that.

That's the one I have! Here's some portraits I did with it.

If you like the 85 FL you won't be disappointed with the 85/1.8 AFD. Have fun with it.

Sounds like a pretty versatile set now.
Enjoy and congratulations for your busy day.

I know what you are getting at but shouldn't that be the angle of view of a 127.5 mm. The lens focal length does not change. I am sure Joe knew what he was doing when he got it and as a bonus you get an even better image by cutting out a lot of the area on a lens that is usually not performing as well as the center. Sorry but I don't want to jack Joe's thread.

Damn Bob, you are absolutely correct.
I just wanted to be a little picky and I guess that not only the three of us know about the crop factor.
Sure this lens is a fine performer and I'm sure Joe will greatly enjoy it.

The 85mm FL is actually surprisingly nice on APS-C cameras, it's close to my other favorite FL which is 135mm.
Here's a shot from Nikkor 85/1.4 on my Fuji S3:
Sadly, the 85/1.4 is not mine, it belongs to a friend of mine here locally.

The 24 is my favorite Nikkor wide. On a trip to Bermuda I shot the 24 and a 50 on a crop camera...the only two lenses I brought. Very pleased.

I'm not sure you would want to trade your 28 for the 24mm.
I have the 24mm f /2.8 AI. It's sharp, but flares easily, and shows noticable barrel distortion.
The 28mm f/2.8 AIS that I just bought is distortion free, more resistant to flare.

There is a bit of distortion but it doesn't bother me at all as I expect it in a $150 lens (mine is the AFD.) The CRC is great and so is the bokeh (scores high on Mike Johnston's list, unusual for a wide) although that doesn't matter to Joe.

What is a couple of mm between friends anyway.
I can maybe see where Joe is going wanting a 24mm instead of a 28mm. My 28/2.8 ais works well on a crop camera but I am a little more pleased with the Kiron 24/2 as it's field of view is nearer to a 35mm. Well 36mm is close enough. Just more comfortable with a 35mm angle of view.

Exactly what I thought for myself.
I don't know, if I'd be happy on the wide end, as I really like a good 28mm.
Nikkor 20mm maybe?
Edit: just saw the 17mm in the line-up.
Pretty near perfect I'd say.

i don't care for a 28 on a 1.5 cropped sensor...much prefer a 24/25...i got a good deal on the 28 and will sell it low also.
as for the 85 on a cropped sensor, i think it looks fine and gives me a little more space than i'm used to...a nice change.

Sorry that was a little unclear.
I meant an 28mm equivalent.

I've owned two Nikon 85's - a f1.4 AFD, which I sold for some forogtten regretful reason, and now an f 1.4 AIS. I am a bokeh nut and the Nikon 85/1.4 is king.
Wide-open, the lens is a paerfect portrait lens -- not exceedingly sharp but just enough, and highly flattering. The attached is form a D700, and converted to B&W in PS.
