Buying a Spanner Wrench

Micro-Tools sells different types of spanner wrenches and you can also find them offered on ebay. I have the type with interchangeable tips and IMO it's the only way to go....... a lifetime investment in a quality tool.

However, there are times when the less expensive fixed-tip type may be necessary as there are lens with collars in recesses that the type I have won't fit. The J-12 lens comes to mind. It has a collar that secures the front and back of the lens together and my spanner wrench won't work.

Hi,
I find micro tools to be a bit expensive. I have just done a re-lube job on a J8 and an Industar 61. I do have a set of spanner wrenches but I found that I didn't need them. In most cases I use a set of pointed pliers with the tips ground down. These work much better than the cheaper spanner wrenches. Other than that all you need is a set of good screwdrivers and these are about a 1/3 of the price in a hardware store. I can post a photo of the pliers if you want.

Regards
Kim

Thanks, Kim. Yes, I would love to see what you did with the pliers--brilliant idea. Why didn't I think of that?

Ask and you shall receive! Not my idea, I copied them off someone else and have since discovered most pros use something similiar!

Don't be pursuaded to buy from the Indian firm that advertise cheap pin-wrenches on the bay - I waited for 3 months and nothing arrived. Luckily, I was able to force them to send me a refund.

They kept on telling me that they were tracking the parcel and the courier firm had tried to deliver it 3 times - bullshine! It has still not arrived.
