I just picked up a Pentax 67 and was looking at a number of threads around the web. I noticed that the "67" has picked up a few nicknames along the way. "The Beast", "Arnold" etc...have been used frequently when referring to the camera. I have given a couple of unofficial nicknames to my cameras. "Hex" for my Konica Hexar AF and "Big Bad Blad" for my EL/M when it was all "kitted" out. Some people may just choose to name a lens...

So, just for fun...

What camera or lens?
The nickname(s)?
Is is masculine or feminine? We know most machines are female... 😉

Nope, not a one! Never really named anything ever, other than kids and pets.

The only exception was a pair of old BSA motorcycles. I named one the Amoco Cadiz and the other, the Exxon Valdez.

That's funny. I own 10 guitars and have probably owned 25. Each one of them has a name and that's the only way I think of them. I've never named a camera despite having just as much an intimate relationship with them.

My Pentax 67 is called "Darth Vader" or "Lord Vader" for relatively obvious reasons. Interestlingly though, it's the only camera I have an official nickname for, the rest are not named.

I've been sometimes telling "Fantastic Plastic" to me GA645i when I reach for it though... 😛

The first camera i named was my Leica M3.
Received new in box, from Wetzlar, without Rangefinder finished..
That was in 1967. We are still soldiering on.
This long together, the M3 is named "ziggy'.
The M6 is pixie.
Long sold the Pentax 6x7 was "Fat Albert".
No other cameras are named.

I name my plastic cameras - Holgas, Brownies, etc.

One of my Brownies is "Flip", since i flipped the lens on it. Many of my Holgas are named after photographers - Diane (A Diana) after Arbus, etc. Each one has its own quirks, so I try to keep their personalities separate when i can. I named one of them "Randy" after the proprietor of Holgamods, from whom I've gotten several modded Holgas.

Black M5 is Mulder.
Silver chrome M5 is Scully.

Mulder has a history. Scully looks really pretty.

My Nikon D700 tends to be introduced as "The (Digital) Behemoth" (it has a battery pack).

None of my other cameras has earned a nickname. Only the ones above. I don't know why...

My 5D seems to have picked up nicknames (yes Plural)
I refer to as a "fiver" or as my 5Diesel which has shorted to Diesel.
But no one other than me knew that as the names were just voices in my head.. (until now anyway). 😛

Nickname, sort of.
I'll refer to any electromechanical device that's not operating to spec a POS.
Just because a device is operating to spec doesn't render it immune to the POS moniker. If this is the case, I'll usually 'nickname' the designers 'idiots' for good measure. 😀
