9/22/2015 Black and white street photography shot with Kodak 120 film in downtown Los Angeles, California. Between homelessness, drugs, and other problems, the LAPD, local security and LAFD have their hands full. Just a few blocks from skid row, and in many other parts of LA, the situation is unreal. To their great credit, the LAPD and LAFD do the best they can. I spoke with them on many occasions, and without exception, they always stressed that the goal was to help. The man in these photos was unable to walk a straight line, or respond to simple instructions, and wandered into traffic numerous times. Without the intervention of the LAPD, local security personnel, and LAFD, the man would have gotten himself killed, and probably injured others as well.

This is a great photo! Love his stern look.

Can I ask how the officers reacted to you photographing the whole ordeal or didn't they look twice that you were walking around the scene, 'creeping' up to them from behind etc?

I always engage with my subjects when I do street photography (smile, thank, wave, whatever to acknowledge I appreciate their 'cooperation') and haven't had many bad experiences, but the few I've had were with some of the subjects you photographed: officers, 'pretty' girls (calling me a creep...) and 'tough' guys. How do you handle that. Especially taking flash shots at night can be a little intrusive.

Thanks for sharing. Great work!

Hi Tijmendal - thanks. I do my best to be non-threatening -- smiling, looking goofy (comes naturally), wear a touristy cap, and try not to hang around in certain situations. Flash shots at night with powerful vintage flashbulbs - yeah that's a trip. I employ a variety of techniques and do my best to evaluate each photo opp -- if I get a bad feeling I keep walking. It varies. In the case of the LA police officers -- more than any other place I've been, they know the law -- that it's legal to take photos. I discussed this with a few officers while I was there so I could ascertain the situation.

Cheers Albertospa, and thank you! Here are two more...

9/23/2015 There are many stories in the naked city, otherwise known as Los Angeles. Here are three photos. It’s up to you, the viewer to supply the narrative.

Have you seen Never Seeing Nothing?
