Calling new 35 Summarit users/former users

I've ordered a summarit-M 35/2.5 just after reading this this thread.
I really like the tone of summaron.
do not like the sharpness of Summicron 35 ASPH, and the price of ASPH either. 😛

I've used summaron 35/3.5,summaron 35/2.8,smmicron 35(v4).
They were all sold for some reasons:
summaron 35/3.5: to my friend.
summaron 35/2.8: too dark at side while f2.8.(maybe that was a bad one)
smmicron 35(v4): price. i can't carry this one with me every day.

Now i just need a new M35 lens with mellow BW tone.
This trhead made me the decision.

Actually, I just realized that the pillared ledge that guy is sitting on in my photo is CURVED, which creates the illusion of distortion. Also the photo is tilted to the right overall. So maybe this photo gives an exaggerated impression of the Summarit's distortion.

yes that ledge is curved - but distortion is clearly visible on table in the top - maybe not so extreme - but it is there...

The vIV 35/2 Summicron has way more distortion than the 35 Summarit. No-one seems to complain about it with that lens. Try shooting with a head or face in the very corner of the frame sometime. Turns that head into E.T.

It depends what you think of distortion. All lenses are loaded with aberrations. Some bug me (field curvature bugs me) some don't (distortion doesn't bother me) - but I know how to identify them. It doesn't matter if you don't think it matters.

It can depend on whether you photograph rectangular buildings or less rigid shapes, but only if you're really worried about the picture rather than wondering if you could buy a lens with less distortion.

Marty

I agree with you to pick a less distortion lens if you worry. But the strange thing is most of the people may accept a V4 to distort, rather than a Summarit distort, even if they are distorting in the same way. I do think it is a somebody perception, a biase.

Agreed: Leica offers distortion data for the Summarits and asph lenses and internet fora provide a fine vehicle for people to talk about "how much distortion" the Summarit has. Few people buy a Summarit to take photos of architecture and fewer know how to interpret Leica's data. The data aren't available for the vIV, which retains its stellar reputation. Few people look at photos taken with it closely or critically enough to identify the optical flaws in the design.

What it ultimately comes down to, unfortunately, is that most photographers don't know aberrations when they see them, but they pay attention to internet lists.

Just getting out and using what you have can teach you a lot, but you have to look.

slight distortion does not kill an image, but that image of the man on the wall beside the bus looked severe. I am sure that 99,9% of the time there is no issue and perhaps in this case various factors conspired to give the impression of severe distortion. Its still the most interesting and appealing lens in the Leica line up for me.

I recieved my new Summarit-M 35 a few days before.

I love the appearance, the font and the aperture ring, which make me feel like using a fully new summaron 35/2.8.
But the range of focus tab's movement is a little shorter, which just take time to get used to.

I can't help waiting until my first roll of film taken by Summarit-M35.

As I supposed before, the BW tone satisfied me.

I had the 35 Summarit and was not blown away by its performance compared to a 35 Cron ASPH that I had previously owned...I therefore sold the 35 Summarit and bought another 35 Cron ASPH..never looked back
