Went to the big city yesterday (Raleigh, NC) and visited a real camera store. One thing I noticed was that they had no brochures for digital cameras (had them for Leica, Zeiss RF and other stuff). It got me wondering if companies like Nikon and Canon even bother printing brochures anymore. I mean they produce new models every day, how could the printing presses keep up? right now Nikon has 9 digital SLR cameras and 17 P&S posted on their website. They have manuals for 25 digital SLR in the support section. Are they in competition with the cell phone makers?

How do you keep up with them? Can there be that much difference between all the models, or at least any difference that worth having?

Here in NYC pro shops are so few and far between (I haven't even bothered to seek out Alkit Pro or Calumet since they both moved outta Chelsea), I can't quite recall the last time I was inside one, let alone when I snagged a brochure for some piece of gear I was vaguely interested in.

The Big Guys would have (and, presumably still have, if you can find 'em) nice, four-color jobs for their top-end dSLRs: Fuji and Nikon are especially good at doing this. Rarely see these things in B & H/Adorama anymore.

When I was thinking about putting together a Hexar system in late 2001, I had to call Konica in NJ to get literature sent to me (the PDF I downloaded from their site was rather poorly done). Somehow, I got two of 'em, plus a Hex AF brochure (the original, thick version, and which still sets the bar for product presentation IMO), and single-page sheet on the just-released M-Hex 35 f/2). Pure eye-candy for the next hour, and yes, I still have them.

With the prominence of the Internets, of course, even car companies don't do the brochure thing as much as they used to. And, as DL alludes to, don't get me going about online/PDF Owner's Manuals...
