I recently graduated from a gr digital, that I had nigh on destroyed and was full of cornish sand

to a gx200, which I sold in a moment of madness

to a leice c-lux, which I hated and drowned in a stream (not intentionally I might add, that'd be silly but my subconcious may have had a part to play with that damn on-off switch eating my battery in my bag )

anyway

my parents, as I am saving for a house, a wedding and a gigantic approaching vet's bill have offered to treat me to a replacement camera

I was considering the gx200 but I sold it once for some reason that I don't entirely recall. There must have been something about it that didn't gel.

I am now torn between that, the Canon Powershot G10 and (this is where you lot come in) the G1

My greatest concern with the G1 is size....is it much bigger than the canon do you think-lens considered as well.

is it much faster ? (perhaps a silly question)

how do the two compare?

The Canon looks like a nice camera, but it still has a small sensor compared to the G1 (you can extrapolate the benefits of a large sensor) . I think the G1 handles more like a dslr compared to the Canon. And you can change lenses on the G1.

The Canon costs about $500.

Canon G10 and Lumix G1 are both very good cameras. It might be easier to advise if we knew what your photographic interests and/or aspirations are. However, here are a few differences to consider...

Physical size: G10 is smaller. Lens retracts when not in use.
Sensor size: G1 sensor is larger (less noise, better LARGE prints, shallower depth of field possible)
Lenses: G10 has wider range built in. G1 has much wider range available, as well as the possibility of very "fast" lenses (low-light/shallow depth of field).
Viewfinder: G10 has small optical VF and fixed LCD. G1 has eye-level electronic viewfinder and articulated LCD.

The G1 wins ... Especially as there are so many different SLR lenses that can be used with it with the aid of Chinese, Polish and Italian adaptors.

Cheers

Edit: You have decided on the G1 ... good choice
