My poor little ricoh gr is officially dead, gaphumt, gazoot.
gone.
A combination of being dragged through the himalayas, largely unprotected, and taken on sandy beaches in cornwall has caused this untimely demise and I am now in need of a replacement.
I would like a zoom, though two or three times optical will do it.
None of this digital zoom nonsense.
preferably metal body
yet I am on a budget, must it be film? I prefer digital, largely due to impatience, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Many of us here really like the Panasonic LX3.

it would take a bit of saving up time, and I know it's an 'evil slr' but has anyone used the panasonic's mini system?

Tthe D-lux3 or the Panasonic equivalent is very nice- no digital zoom, excellent color saturation, perhaps a bit too much distoriton, but a very nice lens, and coming down in price fast.
I've been loving the GR-II lately for P&S.

+1 GREAT IQ! Also, give some consideration to the Canon G10, but my nod goes to Pani. However, both cameras are in the upper price range for point and shoots.

thank you, the d lux 3 is a definite contender. I have long wanted the digilux 2 though, particularly as interchangability is not really of massive cocern. still pricy though and very hard to find
I saw a small olympus hanging around that caught my eye. DSLR type thing, what lenses could I get on that?

How about a DP-1, which has the same 28 FOV as your GRD but a much bigger sensor albeit with a much clumsier user interface? Should be very very handy for taking photos of travels and landscapes.
I think if you look around you can certainly find one at the top end of your budget.

There is a whole micro 4/3ds forum here now--people are gaga about the Panasonic G1. And you can adapt Leica lenses to it. You should check it out.

One drawback of the d-lux3 is the slipperiness of the metal body, but some gaff tape has fixed that. I shot that camera a lot this year, and have found it quite fast, faster when shooting RAW than the GRD2. GRD2 wins hands down for comfort in the hand though.

pottering over to have a look now
I'd quite like to have a fiddle with the lumix compacts as I can't really make my mind up about them yet...

there's a jacobs on the corner, I will go in and look at the dlux 3 over lunch time- it looks just the ticket.

And I bet you can talk them down on a used digital P&S. Even if it has the red dot. Best luck finding the right replacement.

You might also want to check out the GX200, same controls and interface as your GRD but with zoom and very good IQ at lower ISO. Has a better lens with less distortion and fringing than the LX3.

I tried a gx200 and just couldn't get on with it, I don't know why.

I know this question has probably been answered, but does the panasonic lumix equivalent measure up almost the same as the leica version?
It's so much cheaper.

The two are the same mechanically, so if the Panasonic is plastic so is the Leica.

I thought the Leica version would give you sticker shock.
probably want to unstuff that.
It has a metal body. I own one, but here's dpreview's review on the LX3 and the body specs
You might want to browse the site for camera options. Check out the Canon G10, too. It's not as highly rated as the LX3, but in the same price range.
