I know this question has probably been answered, but does the panasonic lumix equivalent measure up almost the same as the leica version?

It's so much cheaper.

If you're going to parade it at high-brow ballroom events or such, go for the Leica D-Lux-4... and the high price it commands. 🙄

But as you mentioned, you actually use the camera and drag it through the Himalayas 🙂 so, I think the cheaper and just as useful Lumix LX-3 will suit you just fine.

Notice that Leica D-Lux-4 is equivalent to Pany LX3,
D-Lux-3 is equivalent to LX2, older model. Easy to confuse, I did until a few days ago.

Ergonomics are the main difference, besides price. I stumbled upon a refurb d-lux3 for less than a new lx2, so got some warranty.

I'm watching a couple of d lux 3's on ebay, a few in turkey for some peculiar reason but I'm skirting round those as I can't make out the reasoning behind their vast number!

strangely, the panasonics seem harder to find?

thank you for the tip off about the lx3's body being metal, I was misinformed.

Does the lx2 have a metal or a plastic body?

what have the leaps from the d lux 2 to the d lux 3 been, any significant improvement?
