Camera neck/shoulder strap?

I'm thinking of getting a different neck strap for my Bessa R3A. It's something I'd have to get if I ever get a ZI too. Any suggestions?

I know one of the sponsors for this site sells leather straps, but not sure how lavish I want to be. Besides, how really practical is leather anyway?

I've wondered off/on about the op/tech. Anybody here using that? How does that attach to the Bessa?

Same goes for the RF:UPstrap. I'm guessing both use metal rings to attach to the strap lugs on the camera. Are these metal rings protected from scratching things?

More often than not when actively shooting I tend the hold the camera down to my side, but use the strap when changing lenses or changing film. But then there's the period between shooting when I don't want to be carrying the camera in my hand all the time. Of course a downside to the neck strap is that I get crumbs all over my camera when eating at a party. :bang:

A newswear.com body pouch just arrived the other day. Very nicely made! Very quick and easy to get camera in and out of the pouch. It can actually hold my Bessa R3A with ZM 50 F2 lens on it, though it gets a bit puffed-out when I do. As much as I want to like it, not quite sure if it's for me. Maybe I need to try it some more.

I have a Domke 5XB and overall fairly happy with it. BUT: 1) why on Earth is there both the flap and the zipper, 2) the zipper is tedious to deal with at times.

I also got a F-803 this past Summer. As a whole I like this bag, but at times the opening at the top is confined enough that it can be tedious to get things in and out. I believe I read somewhere that's a security thing to make theft a bit more difficult. Anyway, for just carrying one camera and lens, a bit more capacity than always needed.

Well, this has turned into a longer rant more than just a query about neck straps, it seems. Though, I guess it's all related. At this point I'm probably more curious about the RF:UPstrap than anything else. Perhaps carrying the camera over the shoulder instead of neck, with the camera tucked between body and arm. At least wouldn't get crumbs on it. 😉 Then for other stuff or longer pause between shooting, stuffing it into the 5XB or F803.

I have the UPStrap on my R-D1. When I use the strap I carry over the shoulder. The UPStrap NEVER slips regardless of what material it is on top of - even leather or nylon. The Epson had those little leather tabs over the lug rings that do an OK job of keeping the rings from scratching the body. UPStrap sells in the US only.

Well I should be getting two gordy straps from my cameras (both neckstraps). They look very sleek and simple (thats why I liked them). The only thing I am slightly concerned about is the exposed metal ring that attaches the strap to the body of the camera.

Anyone know how i could keep the metal ring from rubbing against the body? I remember someone mentioning how you could buy some plastic sleeving for the rings to protect the camera. Any idea where one can buy this sleeving? Or if there are any other alternatives (other than taping the camera up)?

I use Domke Gripper straps on several bodies; they come in two or three different widths and a couple of colors. They are pretty grippy, to the point of occasionally being an annoyance.

As far as preventing rub marks, a couple cameras have leather pads that fit over the strap lug and the strap, one has electrical shrink tubing down over the strap attachment (nice but a little too permanent) and one body has a couple patches of gaffer tape in the proper spots. Take your pick.

I must admit there is a clean elegance to these. I imagine they would wrap easily around the wrist too. Did you get them with the neck pad, or not?

My biggest concern would be what length to get? I guess if I got one long enough I could even wear it as a sort of sling, and keep the camera nearer to under the arm than out in the middle of the chest when not in active use.

I bought one neckpad that either strap can share. I figure I only need the neckpad for my yashica-mat as it can get fairly heavy. My RF is not that heavy so I doubt i'll use the neckpad very often on it.

I got both of mine at the length of 41 inches. I am fairly tall, however. Around 6 feet 2 inches. I almost always wear my camera in a bandolier(sp?) style (such as a sling) in a diagonal across my chest (hanging either near the small of my back or near my side as you mention.

The easiest way to tell how long you want it, is to just take an old camera strap that you have, put it on your camera and get the length to something that you like. From there just measure it for length of the gordy strap.

Yup, it does.

I suppose the gordy straps (without the pads) are also easier to slide around from "rest" position to "shoot" position.

hard to beat a domke gripper if you want to keep a camera on your shoulder.

as for small bags, domke makes one smaller than the 5xb, it's the 5xa and it's perfect to comfortably carry a camera and lens with film, even another lens if you want.

the flap is good for wet weather but if you prefer not to use it just flip it towards your body.

I agree this is a great strap but it costs more than the Domke, which is also quite good. I prefer the very simplest and narrowest Domke without all the quick release hardware.

It does a great job of keeping a Leica from falling on the sidewalk.

I think it needs a few years wearing in, just like jeans and shoes and women.
