I keep hearing people talk about camera shows all over the world. Is there ever such a thing in NYC or around the NY area?

There is the Second Sunday camera show every month in Wayne, NJ. Try this website: http://www.showsandexpos.com/cs.htm
I went to this show several times when I lived in NJ and it is very hit or miss. If you're into people watching it is fun as there are some "colorful characters" manning the tables. Haggling is the rule and a lot of merch on the tables is total junk so go in with an open mind. You see a lot of the same unsold gear week after week.
You can find a good deal if you look closely. At various points I managed to grab some odball filters for dirt cheap and a couple of Minolta MC/MD mount lenses, too. I never bought any RF gear, though. Give it a try and see what you think.

The second sunday show is hanging on by its whiskers. I keep waiting for the next show to be the last. There aren't that many dealers anymore but the guys that are there are looking to deal. If you do go, bring cash. Cash talks. I'll be there next Feb. 12th, maybe I'll see you.

is anyone interested in trying to set up such a thing. A used camera fair in NYC will probably do amazingly with the right marketing and advertisement.

It's mostly dealers. Hardly anyone else shows up anymore.

I don't know why but this really surprises me. I'm located in SW Ohio and there are three really good regularly scheduled shows within 150 miles of me. Plus the Ohio Camera Collector's Show that's held once a year.
The show that I usually attend is in Cincinnati and draws great attendance from both dealers and civilians. That one is held three times a year and draws dealers from all over the midwest and from Canada.
Sure there's a lot of chaff to wade through but there are also piles of Leicas, Nikon rangefinders and other collectibles.
if someone wanted to do it, and could establish the best place for the most people, I'm sure it would be successful in NYC or New Jersey.

I'm sure one could find a good spot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It would be good to attract to crowd of young photographers and artists still shooting film - most of whom reside in brooklyn these days

Photorama is another decent one, Sam and more recently his son Abraham have a long history of shows, having started here in Michigan, Photorama was at one point the largest camera show in the United States. Although I don't believe they go to NYC anymore.
Second Sunday show is alright, but good luck finding any sort of deal outside the bargain bins (full of leather half cases and long lost parts of useless rigs) Unfortunately if it has a name brand on it, the prices are greatly exaggerated. Although I attend the show regularly, its become more of a hangout than a swap.
The large camera shows/swaps are on the decline, eBay has single handedly destroyed the market for these used vendors. I can full heartedly see why, anyone can be a bargain hunter and find a great price on your favourite equipment, why drive hours to a show to pay twice as much!?
If you enjoy being around like minded people, enjoy stories of the "old days", and can stand some horrible coffee in paper cups, Second Sunday is your show.

The OCCS Show is May 17 from 10-5 at the Alladin Shrine Center in Columbus. The auction is held on May 16 at the same location.
I guess it's only fair that you guys come down here since a bunch of us come up to the Detroit show.
