Camera Shy - Need Help

My last photo adventure was with a Polaroid. I would go into neighborhoods and start shooting. It wouldn't be long before neighbors would gather, especially children, and be laughing and sharing the images. Or, I'd go into the bus station at midnight where travelers would sit in quiet solitude. I would start taking pictures and pass them out. The scene would transform in people talking, sharing stories, etc. I found Polaroid photography magical. I now have an M8.2 and feel uncomfortable when I point it at someone. I'm hoping others have had the same uneasiness and discovered something to help work through this situation. Appreciate all thoughts and suggestions.

What a cool way to interact with people 🙂

Ironically, the Polaroid Po-Go may be just what you need, although the quality is so-so, it'd be enough for passing photos around, and this time, you have the high-resolution version of the images in your memory card to bring home.

If you get a monkey and a wind-up organ, you can make some money on the side.

Bizarrely, there is already a 5Mp digital-camera available in Japan with a built-in, ink-free printer. It is available from Megaperls, or whoever they are these days - unfortunately it costs about a third of an M3.

If you want to continue the polaroid thing, which has to attact more attention than any other kind of photography - in my experience a polaroid at a party gets you more friendly attention than having a beer dispenser on your back (not that I've tried) - you can get a Fujifilm PIVI portable printer - it hooks up to any camera with Pictbridge and can make a credit card sized polaroid print in a minute or so (big files take longer, but if you shoot RAW plus small JPEG the small jpeg will be pretty quick to print.

They are always on ebay for 120 dollars or so, as is the film. I guess you're in America but Fujifilm UK are selling out of date film packs for the printer for 2 pounds/20 pictures which makes it pretty cheap to run.

There are a couple of models, the cheaper ones are only IRDA but the 120 dollar one is IRDA and USB. PIVI 100 I think...

Why have a printer?
Just stick with the M8 AND a polaroid for interaction.
People really don't care if the picture shown or offered to them is the one you're gonna use...
As a matter of fact, having given up spontaneity, you could easily shoot people reacting to the polaroid.

I would take a different route, use the polaroids as an ice breaker, you're confident doing that and it seems like the ambiance you've created is great. After handing out a couple of the shots, grab the m8 and shoot with that ! You can show them the images on the LCD as well.
