It's not like she's explicitly unhappy with the iPhone but a lot of the time she'll try to take a picture of something with the iPhone but gives up after the third try because the camera just doesn't cut it (too dark, low DR, etc.).

My wife is partial to a Polaroid 450 and a Nikon F4s, though she more frequently carries around a Canon SD790IS.
If you're looking for a small, automatic digital camera, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Canon line. The 4/3s cameras definitely look attractive as well.
Big picture, you don't want to buy something which discourages her. Start with simple stuff and step forward as she hits boundaries she wants to overcome (ie frustration with auto focus leading to manual, frustration with exposure leading to a desire to have more control, image quality leading to interchangeable lenses, etc). She may need some time to figure out what she values in a camera before committing to something more expensive makes sense.

I was thinking "cameras for casual photographers" would be more politically correct. Being politically correct is not always the bad thing that it has been made out to be, although certainly sometimes it goes too far.

A friend of mine painted a Harley Sportster pink years ago with the intention of giving it to his girlfriend ... he liked it that much he rode it around himself instead! 😱
My wife wants a small, easy to use camera that takes good pictures and videos, and can last an outing on a battery charge.
She does not want to be burdened by a heavier and overly-complex camera that gets in the way of taking a picture.
Nikki likes her DSi camera because the built-in software can make me look even more-goofy looking. Hard to believe.

I tried letting her use the F2. She would use an FG.
She will use the M8, but I end up carrying it and the lenses until she grabs it from me to take a picture.

The title is a bit (maybe even a lot) sexist, I admit.
I do think, though, that it can make a difference. The interest in what one might call 'phallic' aspects of cameras seems to be much more pronounced amongst male camera enthusiasts.
But I really didn't mean to start a discussion about cameras and gender identities (not saying that it wouldn't be interesting). But the title's just there to grab attention. 🙂

I second ( or third ) the suggestions for a small-ish Canon digital. I never get to use my little Canon sd800-something, because my wife always has it.

In 1980, Olympus thought so. I used to work for Kaufman's Cameras in Burlingame, Ca and I remember the Olympus XA & XA2 sales information. The info card listed all the XA features and ended with "male customers" as who we should target for sales. The XA2 list ended with "female customers".

P&S digitals are pretty much all the same. Get one that will work like an Iphone, then she can decide to go up from there.

Jamie, please realize that I did not single you on out a personal basis to bust your chops about the gender terminology.
My two favorite bodies of work I have seen in 2010 have both been by women, Susan Bank and Stella Johnson. But their gender is coincidental. They both shoot exclusively with a M6, not coincidental since both bodies of work were shot in very rural Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Cameroon. Now that certainly does not mean that an ideal "woman's camera" is an M6. It just says that people, regardless of gender, use the tools that work best for them to do the job.
