My wife still owns (though it's been a hundred years since she used it) a Nikormat.
Get your girl an MP or an M9. If she doesn't like it, I'm sure you'll find some use for it.

Just a guess, but since some studies show that females have better aptitudes for math, perhaps a good manual camera without a meter is a good idea. They are probably better at sunny/16 than men.

On a more serious note. If you can, take your girlfriend to a camera store and let her handle a few types of cameras. That will give both of you a good place to start, even if the models are less than ideal.
I would think a p&s would be a good first step. Panasonic has a number of nice cameras that have optical IS. p&s cameras are going to do much better than an iPhone, but still have the convenience of a compact design and ease of use. I think (having an E-P1 myself) that a m4/3 camera maybe on that side of too big and complex--not that she could not deal with it, but it is going to be more of a bother; the best camera is the one you use.

I have recommended the Panasonic LX3 to two women (one my ex-g/f and one my daughter) and they both think it is fantastic. Now my daughter's roommate also wants one.

Does your girlfriend know about the Hipstamatic app? I use it all the time and it makes a great companion to my M2, M4-P and M8.
IMO, every photographer should have a mechanical M, a digital M and an iPhone with Hipstamatic. Except boys who have cooties. Ew. Cooties.

I like the Pentax K-x, just not the fugly one upthread. The white one looks pretty good though. I saw one in Fry's when I was in CA visiting family recently.

My wife's biggest issue with P&S cameras is shutter lag. I'd go for an Olympus. It has a lot of features, but you probably don't need to use most of them to take decent photos.

i can't really think of anything other than the olympus e-p1. it's compact, has a big sensor, and stylish (without being pink). maybe the white and tan version?

I'll second a GF1. My wife uses hers (was mine, I guess) with the 40/1.7 all the time. I also had an E-P1 with the 35/2.8, but she didn't take to it much.

Thanks for posting this Jamie! My girlfriend wants a new camera, and is fixated on a DSLR. But I KNOW that she will never care about changing lenses - she wants the quality of a big sensor, and the shutter lag of an slr. And yeah, she wouldn't mind pink. But she insists on digital, and above all else, easy! So I am thinking of painting my D100, putting an 18-200 on it and giving her that once I upgrade. (I'd give her my 24-120, but ... NO WAY! That lens is magic, and I need it!)
But the pink Pentax is cool. I'll check those out! Can we get them here in the US?
