Cameras, Watches, Pinball Machines and Objectophilia

Brian - I'm totally cool with my age. 100%. Never been better. Never been happier. I'm 48. If asked "what age could I pick?" I'd say, meh, mid-30's? But, no, I'm not upset at all with how old I am...

Life is good. "Kinks" (that we all share) -n- all...

But you raise a good point. The benefit of aging, is maturity which I define as the freeing of oneself from youthful delusions 😉

Now, again, hear what I'm saying... The woman who married the Eiffel Tower has an extreme case of this. We all have "colds", she has a pneumonia.

But everyone here is infected. It's a matter of degrees.

I've used the same type watch for many years...Timex Ironman (Digital)...I've had maybe four over the past 20+ years...love em...
Never cared for Pinball Machines or Video games...
Manual Transmissions...Okay, you got me there...I love shifting...most likely a Control thing but could be that I just find it sexy to do even if I'm driving alone...
Fondling my "cameras" ...I do that...
I like the feel, the sound, focusing, pretending I'm shooting, looking at and actually using them...
I find the older ones interesting, well made, prettier and they have a personality all their own...Just like the cars of old...not talking super old but the cars of my youth...the late 50's, most of the 60's and a lot of the 70's...cars that had chrome...cars that changed every production year...you could tell the year of it coming or going...well made, easy to work on and fun to drive...
Maybe that's why I still own my very first car...a 1969 VW Beetle...my first Love...did I marry it...maybe I did...but been cheating on it with my wife for the last 26 years...

Now- there is a special feeling of satisfaction that I get from making a lens out of parts, taking something that is 75 years old and making it work on a 21st century camera,

Nice to know that it's old, I'm old, but it still has a lot of value in doing the job that it was made for.

Not so much "sex", but more respect for a bygone age.
 
Okay, I use my cell phone as a watch really don't care if what I'm driving is auto or manual got over pinball by 22. I own a fed 5v, a gsn, perkeo 1 and a pentax 645. Cost slightly over $400 show me the latest digital whatever that for that price and lenses costing no more than the pentax lenses and I'll jump on it instead. By the way 2 of my cams are no longer mine after Christmas.

I drive a jeep and a truck, both automatic.

I shoot mostly SLR's, Nikon N70 being my most used camera. Love the AF.

I shoot a Agfa Isolette II, because I like 6x6. If I could buy a modern 6x6 for a decent (to me) price I would use it way more than the Agfa.

I have not worn a watch in over 25 years.

I have never owned a fountain pen.

Pinball is boring, Like baseball.

I just like film. I never develop my own.

Auto transmissions make poor drivers. Functionally, manuals are quicker, more economical, simpler and more durable.
So you can discount that one from the list.

Everything else - I actually agree with you. I actually do lust after beautiful leica gear in the same way a teen lusts after girls in a skin mag. I'm not even ashamed of it 😀
But at the same time my gear is very utilitarian - a 5d, an eos 1n and an x100. Everything I need and nothing I don't.

Mechanical watch yes, but that's because I couldn't afford the Kinetic version at the time and the mechanical one was 1/3 the price. I now swap between them. The mechanical one actually does keep remarkably good time at the moment, maybe losing a second a day.

Manual gearbox yes, but I'm British and we don't like automatics unless they're in big executive cars which are supposed to waft you around rather than be driven with any purpose.

But then I look at the five bicycles in the garage, including three uber-rare Sturmey-Archer AM gear hubs from the 1950s (which need to be oiled regularly and require a certain finesse in operation), and I wonder.
 
I still think it has more to do with being middle aged, and post middle aged.

We like to use the things that we picked up in our youth. It's comforting as you go through life's journey. Wow. But this is the Philosophy Forum.

Oh, and that camera thing I can live with. Only other things are a cheap pocket knife, a brass Zippo (quit smoking years ago), and I'm looking for a nice fountain pen to fall in love with.
