Cameras you bond with, or that have "soul"

I loved using my M4-P probably more than any other camera I've owned. It's that film stuff I just can't seem to bond with.

John

Bonded with:
Pentax ME Super
Graflex Pacemaker Crown Graphic
Retina iia
Leica M4

Used, perfectly happy, but no bond:
Minolta Maxxum (a few)
Koni-Omega 100
Mamiya C330
Bronica ETRS
Every digital camera I've had (I've tried, really)

Pentax K1000 with the tiny M-series lenses. Smaller and lighter than my M3 and much lighter. They've served me well for forty years. Currently out for their first service.

Would probably marry, if I could:

- Fuji X100. The original and looking back at the photos I took with it, definitely a wonderful sensor. WHY did I sell you. WHY???
- Fuji XE2 (the answer to the previous question). Wonderful camera.
- Nikon D200. Probably because I dreamt of owning one.
- Pentax MX - lovely solid little gem. With the SMC 50mm 1.4 the photos I've had from it so far are some of my best to date with film.
- Brownie Six-20 Model E - it was my mum's. Take it off me and die!

Growing on me:

- Leica M5. Now that she's away to be repaired, I realise how much I miss her. OMG... she's a her! I never realised until now. I think this is serious.
- Pentax ME Super. Similar to the MX, but as I've only just acquired it, we're in the honeymoon stage. Seems lovely though. My currently active shooter.

It's complicated:

- Olympus XA. Nice enough camera, cracking lens, all the control I need in a tiny package. It's just, well, y'know, not that exciting to hold. If I dropped it and it died, well, I'd live.

No bond:

- Polaroid 320 Land Camera. Great fun, just not something I like to stroke at night.
- Fuji Instax Mini 8. Same as above.
- Nikon D50. That was what got me interested in photography, as opposed to pointing a PAS camera at a rapidly crawling baby and hoping the shutter would fire quick enough. Wanted the D200 so bad though.
- Nikon D7000. After this, I decided no more Nikon DSLRs and sold it, lenses 'n all.
- Hasselblad 500CM. Borrowed, tried, didn't like. Not my thing. I know, sacrilege!

Off the top of my head:

Pentax ME Super
Konica FS1
Contax T2
Contax T3
Yashica T4
Canon Eos 3
Canon Eos Elan
Canon 1D Mk2
Canon 5D
Canon 5dmk3
Panasonic LX3
Ricoh GRD2
Ricoh GR
Sony RX100

I am pretty sure I am putting in a very custom order for one of these, I bet I bond with it nicely...

Wow! 😱 Thanks for that link ... beautiful. 🙂

And I just remembered there is one camera I have a very strong bond with and that's my old black OM1 ... the soul of Maitani lives within that camera! 🙂

This is a fun one...

Currently Bonding w/:
Leica M6 (I think this is true love...)
Graflex Speed Graphic (A tricky bugger, but we've worked through things and we're starting to get along just well.)
Nikonos V (A waterproof, bombproof, tank of a camera. So cool. I just need more time with it. I have the same issue with this as I do with all waterproof setups...if the surf is good, I'd rather be surfing...not shooting someone else surfing. 🙂
Canon G7X (Pretty sweet little point and shoot. Its always in the bag. Video is great. We are off to a good start!)

Totally Bonded:
Rolleiflex 3.5E (This is true love. I'm not sure we'll ever be separated. She never disappoints.)
Contax T2 (Its like the swiss army knife of point and shoots. Pretty versatile. Nails it every time. The Zeiss Sonnar is bomb and there's flash when you need it. I just don't carry it around anymore.)
Polaroid Land Camera 100 (I love this camera. I bought it for $2 in a parking lot from some lady's car trunk...and its awesome.)
Nikon FM2 (For me, the best of the 35mm Nikon bodies. Never missed a tick. I never missed a shot.)
Nikkormat FTn (I learned about photography on this fine camera. Its like an old diesel powered Benz. Just keeps going and going.)
Fuji Xt-1 (One of my all time favorite digital setups. I love everything about it. I just wish it did video a little bit better.)
Nikon D80 (First Love and introduction to Digital)
Nikon D200 (Second Love...but we weren't as attached)
Nikon D700 (Shot flings here and there...but she knew exactly what I wanted)
Minolta Instant Pro (Favored instrument for instant gratification. Film just got way to pricey.)
Canon Sure Shot A1 (So fun. Its like a rubber ducky with a lens and a leash.)

It Just Didn't Work Out:
Polaroid SX-70 (No me gusta)
Polaroid 600SE (The Goose. So cool. Just sat on the desk. Who wants to cary that behemoth around)
Polaroid Land 190 (too many issues)
Graflex XL (oh where to start. Interesting camera. Actually quite versatile with several backs. I just never wanted to pick it up.)
Leica CL (We tried for so long. We had good days, we had bad days. We loved and hated each other. Finally we moved on.)
Nikon FM (Great camera....super reliable and light weight. The FM2 was just that much better.)
Nikon FE2 (tried to make it work with this one, but the electrical gremlins got the best of us)
Nikon F3 HP (Great body, great mechanics, shoots well, but just lacks soul, I suppose. Can't get in the swing with this one. Gifting to my Pops.)
Canon Canonet QL17 (Nope. Doomed from the start. Just couldn't get in the swing with this one. Everything seemed backwards on it.)
Canon T2i (Canon DSLRs just don't get me)
Canon 5Dmk2 (amazing image/video quality. I never liked the feel of the body though and just couldn't get myself to buy one.)
Canon 70D (currently using for video work. Its a fine camera....we just don't get along)

Can't say that i've ever felt a 'bond' with a camera. There have been those that worked better than others, or felt better, but i don't think i've ever had a sentimental attachment to any of them. The closest would be the Hasselblad 203FE.

NO BOND
Leica M7s. Beautiful, solid, a lovely tactile experience, but more frustration than results in use. I tried to love them, but they forced me to work awkwardly instead of working the way i wanted to.
Contax G2s. Beautiful. Lovely tactile experience. But, that viewfinder! I've had a G2 on 4 or 5 different occasions, and after a few months, sold it.
Rolleiflex 2.8F Planar. Gorgeous. Nice Maxwell screen in it. But, the dials were always stiff, and it wasn't as sharp as the 203FE's 80mm Planar. The 203FE was just more practical.

BOND?
203FE
Nikon FE2 — except for hating to have to pull the wind lever out to use it.
EOS 3 — i've had this the longest. It's efficient. But, there's no love. It's not pretty, and it's loud.
Nikon F100. Nothing not to like. Looks great, feels great. Maybe this is it? I had an F6, but in a rare instance of 'sensibility,' sold 'down' to the F100. It's just more practical, and i don't have to care about it so much. And, whatever the F6 has that the F100 doesn't have, i don't use.
Canon 5D Mk II. It was pretty good for its time.

I might have bonded with the Pentax LX, except i found (2 of) them to be unreliable.

None.

In fact, I loathe my main cameras, a Nikon D800E and a Mamiya 645. The Nikon is especially annoying and far too fiddly and complex. But they both produce images of the quality and size I need so I put up with them…

The Epson R-D1 I once owned was probably my favourite, albeit I dislike rangefinders and prefer SLRs, and it's far too fragile. I'd buy one again if it weren't for the impossibility of repair and the ridiculously small 6 MP images… I print large, and the 36 MP of my Nikon and Mamiya (good 645 film scans are equivalent to the Nikon) are barely enough.

Minolta SRT - simply perfect .
Contax II tan leather / Contax III with Kiev 4 top-late/meter - I love selenium meters ! Rebuilt by Arsenal techs in Ukraine .
Antique digital Leica Digilux 3 / Panasonic L1.
Odd preference - black engraved Zorki C.
Unlikely pairing - Sony A290/A390 , but I love the colours and utter simplicity .
July 2017 Modern digital [ by my standards ]-Fujifilm X-Pro 1 27mm only.

Swapped fiddly OM1 for used SRT - never looked back .

I had a real bond with my Epson R-D1 (plural, I had five of them over the time, always coming back...). Also with my Fuji GF670, what an incredible camera!

Many others I loved and liked very much, and currently I'm really impressed with the X-Pro 2, but it's new and one has to see, how much of a stable and lasting bond that camera creates. But the Epson R-D1 and the Fuji GF670, I will never forget. The latter one will come back some day, I'm sure.
