Camping in Colorado with a Fuji GL 690

I went on a hike through Maroon Bells near Aspen and came out on the other side - Crested Butte. I hiked about 8 miles a day with my GL690 and 100mm lens. I think it was worth it.

Here are some of the shots of the scenery and my buddies.

Of note - I shot everything in Portra 160 (pulled back to 100) and Portra 400 (pulled back to 200). Scanned with Epson Perfection 4990 Photo. Some Lightroom dust removal.

The reason I pulled? Well, on the way out there, like a dummy I left my 220 film in my checked luggage. So I figured if they zapped it too hard then I should pull it back to reduce the fogging. Doesn't seem like it made much of a difference though.

I also had Delta 3200 but I didn't shoot it on account of the zapping.. Will give a roll a try.
 
Sounds like a fun trip! Nice shots. Mega retro colors- you could've told me they were taken in 1990 and I would believe it if it weren't for the modern cars and smartphones. I like 🙂

This is a great reference for me for the rendering of color via single coated glass. Definately a retro look.

It will be interesting to compare to the 100/3.5 AE with multicoating. BTW it seems like I need to send the lens to Frank for repair after checking it with a battery. The battery chech works, but the SSC (Shutter Speed Check) button when depressed just causes the needle to jump momentarily.

I love your avatar pic! That's a GW690 with the top off no? (Or maybe the GSW690).

It's always good to see folks taking these things apart. What did you do to the camera?

Indeed. There is a major difference between the EBC coating of the GW690 mkIII I used to shoot with and this 100mm.

I should have pulled the trigger on the 100 AE when I had the chance!

Too bad about the issue with your lens. Frank can probably figure something out.
 
Sweet, I'll be taking mine for a trip soon. Last time it was pentax 67, turned out too heavy 🙂 fujica time, also over exposing portra can produce difference in colour. I haven't tried my 100 with colour yet, but it's loaded with reala atm, so we'll see.

I use silverfast and pay little attention to post processing. Aside from some exposure control, white balance here or there, dust removal and cropping.
 
Everything looks excellent here. I am sitting on the Vermonter train from Baltimore to Montpeliar with my G690 and a fresh pack of film...and this inspires me. I have found the colors out of my 100 3.5 on Portra 400 are "retro" as well and I adore this aspect of the single coated lens. If you have any more images please do post them. Cheers!

Once I get that 100/3.5 AE repaired Jeremy and I will be testing out the difference in rendering between the singlecoat and the multicoated versions.

Good luck with your shooting. If you get a chance go to Grand Isle and North Hero for seascape like shots on Lake Champlain.

Is there any service that will re-coat a lens for you? It sounds far fetched but maybe there's someone out there that can take a single coated or uncoated lens and add multi-coating.

Thanks! It's a GW690. I had the camera apart to clean the VF, that was a few years ago. That was maybe my favorite camera (tied with Epson R-D1) but I ended up trading it towards an X-E1 when shooting film became unfeasible for me.

I had John at Focal Point re-coat the front element of my version 1 50 Rigid, but this is only single coating.

On my Fujica 150/5.6 the front element has about a third of the single coating missing, but otherwise the lense is perfect. I'm thinking about getting this lens recoated. Understand that John at Focal Point polishes off the old coating and then uses a vacuum deposition chamber to deposit a new coating. Basically a cloud of Florite is made in a vacuum chamber to apply a single coat.

Modern multicoating is a much more involved process that involves many layers of various chemical layers. Of course each manufaturer has their own process that they keep secrete. I suspect that on my 150/5.6 the lens was not properly cleaned and that the original Flourite coating did not bond.

Frank at Camera Wiz thinks that the highest probability is that the CdS is dying. The other possibility is the resistor array for the aperture is dirty, but considering that my 100/3.5 AE looks to be unused and is in like new condition this least likely possibility appears to be remote or improbable.

Frank has a spare CdS available so I'm going to go that route to hopefully have AE function. I will also secure another standard 100/3.5 as a hedge if at a later date the now rare and extinct CdS cell dies that I can simply have the EBC coated glass transplanted into a standard lens mount.

BTW the $239.00 (included the shipping from Japan) I paid for the 100/3.5AE is a lot less expensive than paying for any coating process. Even a single coating from Focal Point exceeds my purchased price.

I got an 100/3.5AE with the BL690, and then I got a non-AE 100/3.5 with the GL690. Are both lenses SC or EBC?
