Can I just say that dpreview's comment section makes me ill?

Why can't "photographers" on dpreview just be civil to each other and not a bunch of spoiled little ****s.

Not that we have not had our issues here, but nothing like the bile that is sloshed around over there!

Well done fellow RFF folks. Well done.

Rotten community. The most commented articles always being the ones on anything Leica. It's a free for all hate-fest.

And film? You do know they make digital cameras now a days?

I haven't bothered to visit that site since I joined RFF - for that very reason. Best internet thing I've ever done. Many thanks to Stephen for hosting this site, the mods for the great job they do, and to the members who so willingly (and politely!) share their experience and knowledge.

Very much along the lines of social media. It's quite disgusting the way a lot of people behave on the internet these days and every year it gets worse.

Civility and respect went out the door some time ago ... welcome to the new world! :(

I'm with the crowd here.
There were some very helpful folks at DPR, back when, but too many smarta$$ discussions that spolied it all for me.
(Somewhat like the old days on 'usenet' .... ask a question and get 15 comments about how stupid you must be.)

I don't mind the comments, they're just comments. Worse is that the site is down the drain for any serious information as well.

Indeed, this Forum is a civilized one, with lots of real...

...professional photographers to take advantage off by us, the aficionados. I just wish some would not take it so hard on those cases when we slip one photo or two taken with a non-RF camera. In fact, I think there is a sub-forum where you can discuss other cameras (can we expand it?). In any case, we should continue to build bridges, not walls.

Yes. I was turned off by comments on this site. Comments under gear review had hate and racism content. I send email to administrator and no response.

It's an equipment site and mostly a specs fest. Sharpness, MPs, etc are the only things that matter. Still beats the comments on an average US news site for civility. ;)

I am going to go full-tilt conspiracy theory here, and say that I believe it is Russians that make all these foul comments in order to sow discord and hatred in the communities.

That theory brings me some comfort, and I hope it is true, because the alternative is that we live amongst some really unbearable people (and a LOT of them, based on the many obnoxious comment authors on news websites).

Nevertheless, I have 0 evidence for this theory.

I've often felt that DPR commenters are the kind of people who would have cheerfully shot all the horses the moment the car was invented.

Different space, different focus, different purpose, different owner.

Keep in mind, years back Dpreview was purchased by Amazon. I read it's focus/purpose is to move new photographic stuff. I think they do a great job at testing some of the stuff, their reviews are pretty good and they have a wonderful listing of specs and often reviews that go back years. While no where near what folks here do on glass it's not bad.

Our owner is world class, has built this site and community into something magical. Dpreview is focused elsewhere, driving sales and profit.

I checked over at Photo Wiki for some leaks and didn't even see any emails........Someone must have deleted the emails from the server!

Yep, that's full tilt! :)

I am afraid there are some obnoxious people around (not Russians - just a-holes). I recall over a decade back I was regularly posting on another site - I think it was photonet (?). It went through long phase of people trolling others about their Leica ownership - this was on their Leica forum, no less. It seemed to attract a group of trolls who did not own, or aspire to own Leicas but came to that specific forum only to bait those who did. Sheer envy as far as I am concerned. It got so bad, I had no choice but to abandon the site which at least had the upside of having me find RFF where I have stayed ever since- we are lucky as this community is good and extremely helpful. People are unremittingly keen to help others who come here. When I checked the other site a couple of years later it was pretty dead but later came back to life - but it took years. That is what happens with poor moderation and slack forum posting rules. And I also wonder if it's partly related to the demographics (age etc) of people on a forum. Young men - cocky, know nothing, full of themselves, think that being rude is funny. That kind of person will destroy a community if not pulled into line.

I believe in staying civil and respectful to everyone around me online, Keith. I would not give up on the internet. There always exist bad apples here and there.

Although not a discussion forum I get kick out of the Lens Rentals blog. Another good site is Filmwasters. I am overqualified to join anything named 'filmwasters'.
