Can M5 take wide angles? like 24 elmarit asph?

getting an m5 but am concerned with the metering on wide angles.. whats your take? Care to share?

So far as I recall, the M5 meter functions as a semi-spot one. You'll need to work out its coverage area in the finder.

The center circle of the viewfinder shows the spot metering zone. It's more an issue of how far the lens reaches back into the camera. The metering sensor is on an arm that swings down behind the lens and then moves out of the way when you press the shutter. Some lenses are physically too long to work on the M5. I can't remember which wide angle lenses that applies to.

I recall that all lenses designed AFTER the M5 will work on it. Some wide-angle lenses, at least in some versions, will not work with any metered Leica, and those are the early versions of the 21mm (cannot recall its designation) and the two early versions of the Elmarit 28mm. I don't think the 24mm lens would cause any disruption in the metering.

Now... you'll definitely need a separate viewfinder. 🙂

They also suggested putting a ring of Dymo tape around the barrel of collapsible lenses to you didn't colapse them into the metering cell.

I've used the 24/2.8 Elmarit-M on an M5 with no problem. The only lenses that won't safely work are all early colapsables, the first 28/2.8 Elmarit, the 21/4 or 21/3.4 SA (without the flange cut-out @ 6:00) and the 15/8 Hologon-M.

With a 28mm lens, the metering area is the 90mm frame lines. Wider means a larger area.

Stay away from the CV Heliar 15mm, it interferes with the meter arm!

If the lens has a regular rear cap, not a deep one you should be fine. The early 28/2.8 pre-ASPH won't go on, but the current lenses should all work.

Are you sure? - I just tried it on my M5 and it seems to work Ok - I dont see/hear anything catching on anything. I cant be 100% sure, but it seems to be fine. Is there more info on the net about this?

I've used the CV 15/4.5 on my M5 with no problem. As already mentioned, if a modern Leica rear cap safely fits a lens, it can safely work on an M5 as well.

I'm looking right now in my 1972 M5 instruction book, in front of me. "The next smaller focal length frame functions as the metering area". "For a 35mm lens, the light-metering field is indicated by the 135mm frameline".

When I had my 21mm CV lens, and used it very successfully on M5, I used the central block to take my meter readings. But, it is very spotty, IMO, since the field is -so wide-. But, I was always happy with the results, due no doubt, to the -awesome- M5 spot-meter accuracy. Absolutely uncanny.

When I was holding my 28mm/2.8 M-Hexanon in my hand in the camera shop, it looked like it might be too deep for my M5. So...I returned the next day, put the lens on the camera and very slowly and very gently advanced the film lever. The meter stalk swung into place perfectly. Upon further investigation, the meter stalk is approximately 13mm from the lens mounting flange. The 28mm M-Hexanon lens extends approximately 11mm into the body.

YMMV! Measure twice.

Nokton 48 is correct about the meter area in the viewfinder. I have the 28-90 pair of lines in one of my bodies. That's how I know that the 90mm lines work for the 28mm lens.
