Anyone know if an olympus 35 SP lens can be cleaned if it "has a couple spots" ?

i just won one on ebay, with the intention of overhauling it and getting it in tip top shape ( gee i wonder who ill have do that??? lol ) it appeared to be in very good cosmetic shape, and the owner said that the test chromes showed no flare, or evidence of the spots.

now im wondering, will that old pentax takumar lens trick work on something like this????

anyone know?

Ah, so that was you I was bidding against!

I can't be much help, but I doubt it will be hugely difficult project. It's likely that there are just some dust specks in the lens. Unless the battery in this SP is incorrect or wonky, my guess is the meter may be a bigger issue. Keep us posted. Congratulations!

oh so that was YOU raising my price! how rude! lol. im not as concerned about the meter, as i would like to get a little handheld sekonic ( i trust those more anyways )

sheesh. you need a THIRD Sp? an you were going to take it away from me? i dont even have one! lol someone needs to teach you some manners my friend.

ill keep everyone posted on the restoration project. BTW im going have it painted black ( i dont give two hoots about it not being original black, itll look better, and its MY camera :) )

Please update this thread with your progress on the 35 SP. I'm waiting on a 35 SPn from *bay (item# 7584760817) that I took a chance on ---good price and appears to be in good shape, except that it was described as needing the lens cleaned. I'm hoping that it can be repaired and if so it will be a good deal.

thanks,
Steve.

was just sent this tearful little note by the sender -

"It looks like a powdery type of material, I have not taken it apart to check, but I think it is a type of fungus.

Take Care

Stuart"

im about ready to cry. because this most likely means a replacement lens is needed. AGH!!

ill keep everyone posted on my epic journey. i should receive the camera in about 2-3 days. ( At least the seller is very prompt :) )

sorry man.. i mustve had something bad at lunch today cause i got really bad GAS and bought that one too..

damn me.. :)

John Hermanson at Camtech says that in the Oly repair shop they used .... wait for it ... Ponds cold cream to clean fungus! Now if it is bad/long-standing, the etching may have ruined the lens beyond repair... except for shots where you want some softness/flair, etc.

Regarding the meter, if it's good TRUST IT! It's a damn good meter in my experience, and man, the spot function is tied with the lens for THE REASON to get this camera!

OMFGWTF?! ( woo internet lingo! ) ponds cold cream?? like zit remover cream??? LOL that is the best thing ive heard all day.

im hoping that the lens is only in its beginning stages of infestation because it isnt flaring yet ( oh please God, please please ) but at least i know the 2nd one will work like a charm.

i was thinking of painting one in Hammertone ( for chromes ) and one in black ( for b/w film ) yea? yea? lol cmon. how often do you see a hammertone oly Sp??

Yup, swear to g*d. If you need to, send an email to John; he's a very helpful guy. Dunno about the hammertone, but you give it a try and show us here ... if I like it I may have a go myself. Better you than me!

I'd be more upset if everyone around here wasn't so darned nice ;)

No worries, I should just post a WTB in the 35mm Classified section. But part of me is resisting the GAS...I should just breathe deeply and succumb to the fumes...

thats harsh man... lol
i think it would be novel. but i probably wont do it.
what i would really like is that really nice leica matte chrome on one. and black chrome on the other.

looks like iw ont be the first to have done it....

doesnt look too bad! and the black.. well we all know the black looks GOOOOOD

I think you'll like the original Olympus chrome on this body. Not Leica, but very nice quality and feel. :)

is it similar to the Oly RD? i liked that chrome very much so and im still mad at myself for selling it. it was just so pretty...

I've never owned or handled an RD, so I can't compare. But let me pull out an SP for a little fondling.

OK, I'm back now ... with a cigarette. Seriously, its smooth and satiny, but not as deeply sensual as "the ultimate".

The SP is in the post and the chrome is very good on it. The one thing I was tempted to do with it was to invest in a camera leather cover. One of the soft goatskin leather ones!.

Kim: The kid skin leathers are really nice. One of my SPs is dressed in one.

At first I was concerned that is a little "slicker" than the standard black leather, which on the SP has a rough yet very nice feel. But I quickly got used to it, and like how it is more of a luxurious feel. I think I'll keep the other SP in original clothing. Which means that if I want yet another look/colour, I'll have to get yet another SP. :D

yay! i cant wait to shoot with the SP. thank you for the update Kim, do you have any tracking info by chance that you can email to me?
thanks!!

( i am also tempted by those luxurious leather skins... mmmm a nice smooth black leather would be heaven)
