I bid on this lens over the weekend. This morning I learned that I was not the high bidder. This afternoon I get a "Second Chance" offer. Now I'm wondering if this is a case of, "If it's too good to be true it probably isn't."

NIB Nikkor 10.5cm lens

What say ye?

I've gotten those before. Usually because the high bidder actually bailed in one way or another, or didn't meet criteria required for the sale. I took one person up on it, in fact. Everything seemed fine. So it's a legit option for sellers. No comment on whether that seller is legit.

I would send a message to the seller and ask why 2 other bidders dropped out. One was South Korean which may mean the seller is not happy but the other has good feedback in the States. Ask fo a phone number and call the seller. If that all checks out, go ahead. The original listing was Paypal so I would use that or CC so you can get a chargeback if it goes wrong. Quite often it is genuine but it doesn't do any harm to be cautious.

I have had this happen on NIB sales... Turned out the seller had more than one for sale and just went down the list of bidders until he/she got rid of stock at a reasonable price... I was a little wary at first, but in my case the seller was a big/reputable store. As Allen said, I am not making any comment here about the seller you mention. If there is a phone # I would suggest talking to someone in person...

Thanks, everyone. I will tread cautiously.

What about the merchandise itself. Is it possible that this lens is in fact new in the original box? It doesn't seem possible.

Going by the pictures it doesn't look absolutely new (the paint finish on the focusing ring seems to have a bit of "patina") but does look very well-cared-for. It's certainly possible to find older lenses in almost-like-new condition with the original box and papers. When I buy equipment new I always save the boxes and papers, and I'm pretty careful with it, so I've occasionally sold things in similar condition to your 105 (although not quite as old.) So the condition of this lens is unusual but not implausible, I'd say.

In fact, I've heard it said that older Nikon equipment generally is either very rough or nicely preserved, seldom in-between. The rough items were those bought by professionals and used heavily over many years. The nicely-preserved ones were bought by fastidious amateurs (often servicemen taking advantage of Nikon's sales through PX shops) who wanted to have good equipment but used it only occasionally and stored it carefully between uses.

The one or two times I've been "skunked" by a winning bidder I usually offer to the next five top bidders under "Second Chance".

The longer you wait the less chance you have!

Second Chance Bidding is well described on the eBay site. Why didn't you look there first before asking for "scuttlebutt" here?

Jeez, if you don't know the "rules" don't bid!

No worries. I'm a newbie at eBay, overly cautious and followed eBay's explanation of the second chance offer. The message didn't appear in my messages on eBay. I did reply to the second chance offer first. My bad! :bang: I then contacted the seller. It was a bogus offer. I'll be more careful next time.
