Can you help me with lenses please

Hey there,

I'm looking to pick up an X-Pro 2 some point soon. I have a Nikon D750 at the moment, great camera, but too much of a beast to really take out.

I'm trying to grab one lens to start with and get good use out of that before getting another. I know I want something wide that I can do environmental portraits with.

Trying to find what type of lens, a 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm equivalent are all on the table.

I thought the were pretty good, I liked the field of view.

I was wondering what people thought the above pics were taken with - to me they look either a 28mm or 35mm but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Hmm, in those "streetsnaps" pics I'd almost bet on a longer focal length. 50 or even more.

Either that or he's done a lot of perspective correction in post production...

I disagree about 50mm or longer. None of these feel like telephoto shots, and to me a 50 is a mild tele. The frame is more loose than tightly cropped. I think this looks like 35mm at most. You don't get much distortion with a 35, especially when you bend your knees and are conscious about not shooting down, so to speak.

These definitely were not shot with a 21 or 24 equivalent.

Most look like 35mm equivalent to me. One of them (the guy sitting on chairs in front of a shop front) might be 28mm equivalent. How I made that judgement: 1) angle of view 2) difference in the size that objects are rendered foreground vs background.

Edit: are you able to view the EXIF data?

go to flickr and check out the different fuji lens groups...i recommend the 16 for a great walk around lens.

Thanks for the suggestions! Looks like 35mm may be right, perhaps a 28mm but not wider.

No EXIF data alas on the post, hard to know the photographer to look at more of their work too so I can't do some investigating!

Maybe more relevant is what lens did you like to use most on the D750?

To me the linked photo looks ~35mm. Other photos could be 28 or 50. It seems Fuji has a nice 23mm to give you the 35mm equivalent field of view. Or there's the 27 for a roughly 40mm.

Here's a thought, what about the Voigtlander 40/2 for the Nikon? Curious that you consider the D750 'beastly' as it seems to be one of the smaller FF DSLRs on the market...

Really, for these kind of 'hip' street photos just get a used beater M9 and a used Zeiss or Voigtlander 35 of whatever flavor tickles your fancy. 🙂 Maybe even better, an old LTM Canon 35/2. Might not cost much more than the Fuji kit.

Try the Fuji 27mm f/2.8 or the Fuji 23mm f/1.4

Get the kit lens. I hate to say it but it is very good. I planned on getting the 56mm, 35mm and a wide lens as my kit but am quite happy with the kit lens. I'm going to use it for a while and see what focal length I use the most (I bet it's 35mm/50mm equivalent) and then get the prime that matches that.

Pretty hard to say for sure, no EXIF data on the lens is embedded in the JPEGs. Pics look to me like a 35 or maybe 28 equivalent. I'd suggest the 23mm 1.4 for stuff like this, will give fuji's shallowest DOF for a wide.

The 23/1.4 is very nice. However it is large and a bit heavy.

I use the 27/2.8 pancake lens or the 35/2. I sold the 35/1.4. The 35/1.4's older AF motor technology may not be a significant disadvantage or environmental portraiture.

The 27/2.8 performs well from f 2.8 - 8. The field curvature is only average. The lens has a high degree of barrel distortion which is handled by the on-board lens correction parameters.
