Today, I decided to finally use my Cannonet QL17 and tried to screw in my generic, German made, 49mm hood but it wouldn't go on. It appears that the threads on the lens are coarser than those on the hood. Am I right and does this camera require a dedicated hood?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

That's right, 48mm. When I used a QL17, I had another original hood (I don't know about the rectangular clip-on-hood), which was made of collapsable rubber and fitted into the 48mm-thread of the lens.

Try a 48-49mm filter adapter and your generic hood again.
