Canon 100/2 on M9

I sold my copy of this lens a while back, as I had been moving mostly into digital and it didn't work so well on the R-D1, especially wide open. Now that I'm shooting with the M9, I bought another copy (thanks, Maiku!).

This combination is fantastic. What an incredible lens--quite sharp wide open, and though it's a challenge to focus it is doable. The M9's 90mm framelines actually work very well. All from yesterday:

Do you see purple fringing here? I sure don't.

Speaking of this lens. There is one for sale, it's apparently an "FD" mount, how do I use it on a Leica M mount camera? (M2 to be specific)

For that FD lens I'd get a good Canon F1 body.

Yeah, I keep looking at that photo and shaking my head in disbelief. Even stopped down, this lens gives a beautiful sense of depth and dimension...it is way sharper in the center than I had any right to expect of it, and the bokeh is really lovely.

I have the "R version of this lens (for the Canonflex) and agree that it's a charmer. Really impressive portrait lens too, especially when used wide-open.

John, did you ever happen, to have to adjust the aperture ring on your samples or open the lens - is it easy/ accessible?

I consider buying a sample, which happens to have a loose aperture ring - aperture works nicely, but the ring does have play.

I too was very, very impressed by how clean this lens is right from f2, where I tested it in the shop Yesterday - extremely sharp, very different character from my 90 Cron pre ASPH (this is somewhat soft, but provides a much smoother, more creamy background).

EDIT:

- bought it
- unscrewed optics module
- removed three small screws, holding aperture ring
- cleaned assembly
- put aperture ring back in position
- screwed three screws back with the slightest hint of green Loctite (careful, not even half a drop, just enough, to slightly bind the screw for later easy removal)

- in love with that lens - fantastic tele for (still) a bargain, measured at Leica money (think 90 Cron pre ASPH)

I am indeed speechless at how crazy detailed and sharp this lens is wide open! It is a freaking 60+ years old! Show this to some of the kids over at dpr, contemplating over newest zooms and pixel sharpness - crazy world it is ;-)
