looking for a faulty copy for parts

looking for a faulty copy for parts

it has been a while, but there was no way I could miss you, Robert ( rhl-oregon ) and KoNikon having clean copies that are assembled wrongly or have other mechanical issues.

this because I have two otherwise good copies of the black / chrome version which both have the same internal glass that is milky, etched to a degree that makes one useless, the other barley useable. I figuered that this is a typical problem for this lens and therefore never hoped to find someone who would have a copy for parts with that element clean, but you now gave me hope!

Am I lucky? Can one of you, or anyone reading this, sell me his faulty copy but with clean internal glasses ( resp. a clean lens element, the one behind the aperture ) rel. cheaply?

cheers, andreas

( oh, and btw. I have the same problem with the black 1.8/50. Again Ihave two copies with the same fault of the same inner element, just to a lesser degree, one is soft /glows, the other almost normal, but again I'd be very happy to find a clean glass element, best cheap from a lens for parts )

Andreas, I just happened to read this. I'll pull out my all- black 100 tomorrow and have a look through it on the light table at my developer's shop. I can shoot a few macro pix of the results with the GR and send them to you privately.

I was in Japan recently and looking out for this lens, which I am interested in due to its compactness and light weight after reading many positive comments here and elsewhere. I looked at 5 or 6 copies and all of them were hazy, some of them to the degree that it made you think you were trying to look through frosted glass. Even the one with the least amount of haze was definitely looking milky when you held it up against the light, so in the end I refrained from buying one. The last dealer I visited told me that practically all later (black) 100s he had seen were hazy and the haze was of a not removable type caused by some properties of the used glass type.

I almost gave up on finding a good one, but now I think if this process might somehow be accelerated/caused by humidity (which is relatively high in Japan year round) it might be possible to find a good one outside of Japan. For those of you who own the lens, how is your experience? Is your copy clean or does it show haze?

it took me buying 3 copies before I got a good one, all bought via auction in Japan. I realize that actually I was very lucky because almost all that I have seen selling in shops, many shops in both Osaka and Tokyo, had haze to an extent that makes the lens pretty much useless. The haze is as much as impossible to remove, I have tried all I could with my two prior copies.
I did come across copies that are fine, but they are rare and don't sell cheaply, still a bargain imo for less than 200 usd.
I have no idea if copies that have lived in less humid places are less effected

A little haze never killed anyone. My copy, samples above, has some.

certainly a little haze doesn't kill anyone, but one of my lenses is absolutely useless, the glass is etched to an extent that one hardly can see through, another is quite a serious case too, useable but with obvious limitations, my 'good' copy also has a tiny bit of a haze, but limited to a small peripheral area, never mind 🙂

Andreas, glad to hear your quest ended happily! As I get ready for 10 days in Kaua'i, this thread makes me rethink which gear to take (in addition to my snorkeling cam, i.e.). The 100 3.5 is so petite and will draw distant vistas so intimately... [goes back to fussing over travel kit]

thank you Robert, and wish you a great time below the sea, and also on land with the perfect gear 🙂

The reports of haze on the surface behind the aperture being common- very true.

Test after swapping the bad element out with one from an SLR version.
