Canon 25mm Viewfinder

Hi RFF,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience fixing viewfinders. I have a 25mm viewfinder that is missing the front glass and was wondering if it was salvageable. Has any one gone to an optometrist to get a viewfinder fixed? or any other place?

Its not a simple, flat piece of glass, looks like there is a convex curvature to the piece. When I look through the viewfinder it looks blurry.

I suspect the optics of a viewfinder would use a specific optical formula to give the 25mm point of view. I doubt that an optometrist could duplicate the curvature of the missing front element. That being said, maybe he, or somebody, could insert a piece of glass to make it "good enough" to use. Maybe not tack sharp, but not as blurry as it currently is.

Well my thinking behind going to an optometrist is that it seems like the viewfinder is "nearsighted" in its current state. Kind of like a person who "can't see" without his/her glasses. It might take a bit of trial and error but I was hoping an get an optometrist to cut glass with a negative power to essential fix the myopia. I was just hoping to see if anyone had experience fixing viewfinders.
In the end it does seem like alot of work.

That may be a tough fix. Maybe you can find an schematic of the optical make-up of the finder. If not, a CV/Zeiss finder will do.

Hm. Just the other day sold an identical viewfinder with the front glass totally shattered to a buyer in the Netherlands. Friendly fellow who I'd been in contact with before and who was hoping to find a similar spare part from an optometrist for his finder as well.

Can't say that I ever found the detailed optical schematics for any viewfinder online, Canon, Leitz or Voigtlander. Then again, I didn't look for them either. Still, my guess would be that it's gonna be pretty difficult to find those schematics.

In short, I'd say you need an existing front element to be able to copy, because calculating a front element would be near impossible without measuring the other elements in the finder first. An optometrist who'd spend that much time on it would likely cost you more than a complete viewfinder...

Maybe try with recognized Canon repairmen, somewhere Japan maybe?
