As for your close-up's. I'm impressed. My own 50/1.5 is a bit "off" at close distances. It's excellent middle distance and @ infinity and I'm quite happy though. I thought this was a error by design and moved to my Nikkor Sonnar for close up's. Or do you made some calibration work on your lenses??

I'm really looking forward to that! Congratulations on your recent acquisition and the images sure looks good. Looks like the scratch has no impact on the images after all. It's one of my favorite lens too!

It was spot-on at close distance. I shot that with an M6TTL, if memory serves.

I've had better luck with fast lenses close-up than I have at infinity, including the Canon 50/1.5, 50/1.2 and Summilux 50. I think the RF's in these cameras, particularly the short-base R-D1 I'm working with now, work great close up, but can't always tell 60ft from infinity.

Thats what I use anyway ... and I don't own the .95 🙂

Anyways, the M-mount forum has 970 members to date, and > 17k photos in the pool. Would be great if our tags would become Flickr standards .... There was an introductory RFF thread maybe 2 years ago when Robert and Alkis founded it.

My current f1.5 was from a 1956 VT (one of the last lenses) and it`s perfect at all distances, I don`t know what was off on the first one, but this one works well

My 1.5 just arrived in the mail from Camera West and it is FLAWLESS. They rated it a 9+ and I paid $399. They have one rated a "9" in stock for $350, too. This is the most beautiful lens I have ever seen in my life!

Ken -- My Canon 100/3.5 has the same <EP> stamp. It's my understanding that this meant the lens was originally sold in a U.S. military PX. Tom will probably know the correct answer, though.

Not necessarily rarer just different.

<EP> stands for Exchange Post and does indeed signify that the item was made for sale in a PX or by mail to servicemen duty free and usually at a lower cost than available in the States.

Here is the catalog my dad ordered his Canon from in Korea in 1954. On page 9 you can see a 50mm f/1.5 lens for $85. In contrast, Here is a Canon USA catalog from the same year and the same lens is $168 Stateside. Boy I wish he'd gotten that lens but the f/1.8 is nice too!

Well, someone else answered it for me here.........but yes, the <EP> is for "Exchange post" which were items sold to US Military in Asia (mostly for Tax reasons in Japan) from about 1951 to 1971

Not all lenses that have this symbol are valuable or uncommon but the f1.5/50mm "Japanese Sonnar" the lens that this thread was started about with this symbol on it is truly Rare, with very few made, that`s why I received a pretty good amount of money for it on a Very Rare Canon IIF2/Rapidwinder combo and it did go to a Photographic Museum........

You know it`s funny, but Canon production of the f1.5/50mm doesn`t even come close to the Nikkor f1.4/50mm numbers
(I forget what they are but the Nikkor production dwarfs the Canon number, because of all the Tower/Nicca contracts)
...but the Nikkor is now like almost 3 times the cost of the Canon, and the Canon`s the rarer of the two (and the Better) in my opinion - my (2) Nikkor f1.4`s (a 1950 and a 1954 one) don`t get half the use my Canon does, I just like the Canon`s look better, less contrasty than the Nikkor and it works better in both color and blk n wht mediums in my style of Photography 😉

I dunno, recent eBay sales I've seen have the Nikkor 50/1.4 selling in the $400-$450 range, and the Canon 50/1.5 going for $300-$350. Counter-intuitive, given their relative rarity, but not a 3x difference.

Well the Last Nikkor with both caps and hood I saw was $1,000, (an ebay record)
I always try to look at lenses with what they were sold with, well at least caps, but I like to also buy the original hoods with ALL my kit, regardless of what it is, and when it comes to lens caps , there`s people out there who want like $100 just for the Nikkor cap alone......krazy - In the long haul it`s a better investment to have all the caps and hood correct, while if I ever do resell I make what I paid for it and some on top of it as well, for just having the kit "altogether"

.......... the last Canon f1.5 I saw sell for was like less than $300, (with no caps and no hood) so prices can be flighty, but the Nikkors are always more expensive, but not necessary the better lens

I say invest in the Canon it will reward you with tons of fantastic no worry photos!

I have a Nikkor 50/2 in LTM (from another RFFer) and I'm still working on grokking its characteristics at different apertures and distances. Perhaps the Canon 50/1.5 would be an interesting comparison.

I like the Nikkor 50/2 a lot -- its build quality is fabulous, and the focus is silkier than any other lens I've ever owned in any mount. (My only quibble is that since I had some sticky oil cleaned off the diaphragm blades, the click-less aperture turns so easily that I often accidentally move it while focusing.)

I am fortunate to say I have the Nikkor 50/2, Canon 50/1.5 and Rigid Summicron 50/2. These old dogs really are my favorite lenses. Perhaps not clinicly perfect like the modern stuff, but the best match for my taste.

Oh, he knows what it's worth!😀 After a check up from his repair guy I think he plans on selling it to help finance a D-700!
