Canon 50mm 1.8 Question/Epay

So I'm searching for a Canon 50mm f1.8 and see the price's can really very. From $150 to over a grand. Why is that?
I can understand condition, chrome vs black, with or without lens caps and such. But are their some very rare Canon 50mm f1.8 lenses out there? Are they really that special? Why?

If the lens is in good condition, it's terrific and under-appreciated still. I wouldn't spend more than $200 on a good sample, though. Canon made a lot of them. The basic design is the same in all versions, from the early chrome Serenar to the later chrome and black models, so I'd base the selection on condition. Prices on the 'bay can get a little crazy. $150 sounds way closer to reality than a grand.

I concur with Bingley's assessment- a good lens, and cheap too, $150 is about right

Where are you getting your prices?? I got one off ebay 2 weeks ago for under $50. Perfect optics/body but with one giant dent on the lens cap. Works perfectly and is VERY sharp. Look around and be pateint.

I have an pretty early chrome in nearly mint condition and with caps and all that's nearly identical to the one he has for sale. I couldn't fathom that it was worth that much in anyway shape or form. I'm still pretty sure it's not and shouldn't be either. Thanks folks.

Optically they are all the same lens.
I realize that mr. Kevin has a lot of nice old lenses, but hte prices are way high, even the most common lenses seldom drop below 250USD, 50/2.8 and 50/1.8 included.

Noel linked me to this thread from the other place. I've had one for sale, [edit, is spoken for I think]. It was my main lens (actually preferred it to the 50/1,2) until I sold the m2. Granted it's a common lens, but that doesn't mean there's always one available at the right price or in the right condition. I had a mint one, and it took a few years after selling it before I came across another in almost the same condition.

IMO the only reason to look at gokevin offerings is to see what would be an absolutely crazy price to pay for an item 😛 As always, check completed listings.

There's a Serenar for $178 BIN listed right now. "Fine scratches" but I don't see them in the listing photos, and they are good photos. May not really be worth $178 but you get it now, no hassle, which has some value.

No relation to, or experience with, that seller.

I've purchased stuff from Kevin before, but I think his prices are targeted more toward collectors and tend to be quite high. If you're looking for a good user quality lens to shoot w/, I'd recommend KEH, classifieds here, or (roll of the dice) the auction site.

seriously, I think you need to look at the condition, the "make" (some have different bodies), included accessories (hood, filter, caps) and other factors to the price. I have one with excellent glass and paid about $200 in a face-to-face transaction. I guess a totally mint one kept in an Argon gas container will be worth north of $1000 😛

It's a very nice lens, and for the price, I think it's quite good deal...better than a lot of lenses. It doesn't have a cult following (yet). There are better 50's out there, but I think at a realistic price of $150-250 for a nice one, it's hard to find a better deal.

btw, you should try selling it at a price you're comfortable with. If you think it's worth X then you should try for that. You might get bites. Unless you need the cash, anything less than what you want for it will probably make you regret selling it.

Obviously, your mint condition lens will probably fetch more than the average, so you can ask for a higher price. You can post an add in RFF's classified and adjust the price accordingly...
