I think it was only in production a little while before it was superseded by the 50mm f1.9. I think its price reflects its rarity. Joe

Double the price of a Summitar is not bad at all for a rare lens.
If if it was a rare 50mm f2 Nippon Kogaku made lens it would be priced much higher.

Just looked at Peter K's Canon rangefinder book. The 50/2.0 was "the third lens developed by Canon for commercial use." Introduced in February, 1947.
Probably discontinued in 1949. Gauss formula, 6 elements in four groups. There were several variations. it is a rare lens, with less than 2,000 produced.

The Canon Museum has very little information on it: https://global.canon/en/c-museum/product/s20.html
Some of the lenses have descriptive text, such as the 50/1.8 1st version: https://global.canon/en/c-museum/product/s18.html
You can spend a lot of time poking around the Canon Museum!
