Hey folks, I just acquired a Canon RF hood with a set of filters. (I thought it was the hood for my 50/3.5 collapsible, but when I received it I discovered it was not.) Here it is:

I've never seen one of these before, but Kevin's Cameras has a couple that look similar, listed as being for the 50mm f/2 lens. Can anyone tell if mine is the same thing?

Kevin is asking frightening prices for his -- is this really such a valuable collectible? (If so, it's in pretty good condition -- the filters even have the remnants of the original cellophane wrappers, and two leatherette disks to protect the front and back of the stack when stored in the case.) BTW, the case for mine is not marked "Canon", nor anything else in English -- it just has 7 small Japanese characters stamped on the back near the strap loop.

Can anyone help identify this for me, and maybe give me a sense of what a fair price might be if I were to offer it for sale on RFF? (I'm planning a major blood-letting among my accumulation of RF lenses and accessories.)

Thanks,
Ari

John, so this is, in fact, a hood for the 50/2?
Cool, though I've never seen that lens either - is it supposed to be any good? Never mind, I don't want to know-- must repeat until firmly fixed in memory: "I have too many 50s, I have too many 50s..."

Anyway, I'll try to offer it here first, as I know there are some Canon RF enthusiasts hiding out.

If the canon 50/1.9 and 3.5 take the same hood you are looking for a square vented hood for your lens. If this one is 42mm push on it could work with a multitude of lenses but from it's shape it has to be for a 50mm, not for any of the 35's. If I could be sure it would not vignette on my Canon 50/1.5 I would be very interested since it is chrome and would match well...

No, the 50/3.5 uses a cylindrical hood (not flared like this one). However, you gave me an idea - it's push-on 42mm, but with a series VI filter ring/adapter. I have a 34mm screw-in series VI adapter, which I bet could be used to mount this hood on my 50/3.5 (I've been using a hood for the 50/2.8 for now). And you're right - if it doesn't vignette, that would be a more compact option for the 50/1.5 or 50/1.8, whose hoods are designed for 35mm lenses as well. Interesting....

Hi,

Bit late in replying, as I have been on a 6 week R&R and out of touch with everything electronic... yeh.

The hood in question was produced by Canon to screw into the filter thread of the Serenar (T3)5cm f/2 and the (T7)13.5cm f/4 lenses that were produced between Jan 48 & March 49. If the un-mounted filters have a small "Seiki" engraving on the edge of the glass then they are quite RARE but as these lenses and hood were produced after Canon changed from Seiki to Canon Co then I doubt if they are marked as so. Canon didn't produce mounted filters until the coloured stacks appeared shortly after the 50mm f/1.9 was produced in April 1949.

Nice set and very collectable and not all that common as they were an alternative to the more common slip-on version. Peter
