Hi guys,

Recently, I find great interest in the Canon 50mm f1.2 rangefinder lens for its unique bokeh characteristics. May I ask the possibilities to attach this lens onto a Leica M6?
I'm very new to Leica M camera so please be kind with my questions if this have been ask many times already.

May I ask what are the modifications that I need to do in order to make this lens work on my Leica M?

Oh, and what does LTM mean?
I saw some sale on the internet say "Canon 50mm f1.2 LTM," and other will just say "Canon 50mm f1.2 rangefinder lens."

thank you in advance,

Nico

Hi Nico,
LTM stands for Leica Thread Mount. You need an M-LTM adapter (around $35-$55) to use the lens on an M body.

Does the Canon 50mm f1.2 originally comes in LTM mount?
If not, do you know where and how I can modify the lens to become a LTM mount?

thank you very much,

Nico

All the canon rangefinder lenses (to the best of MY knowledge) were Leica screw mount. They have the same diameter, thread pitch etc. This is also known as the Leica L mount, or M39. Sometimes also called Leica thread mount. All these lenses are mountable on an M mount camera, like your M6, with the above mentioned adapter. The adapters come in different focal lengths, so that they will bring up the proper frame lines on Leicas.

There are also a lot of lenses out there from other manufacturers in LTM. I.E. Nikkor, Komura, and most recently Voigtlander. There's tons of into about those lenses in the Leica Screw Mount Copies forum.

I have heard that some screw mount lenses with infinity locks can be troublesome on some LTM to M adapters, however, I haven't had this issue and can't speak to much more about it. I'm sure someone here can explain. Best of luck and enjoy!

This lens works flawlessly on a Leica--it is indeed LTM. If you have a screwmount Leica, you can mount it directly. If you have an M Leica, Hexar, R-D1, Zeiss Ikon, or Voigtlander R-series, all you will need is an inexpensive LTM-to-M adapter.

Thanks for the kindness and the help.
You guys made my day!

Now I just need to know what I can find this lens.
If anyone knows or have one for sale, feel free to PM me or leave a note here.

cheers,

Nico

The only thing I didn't like about it was the soft corners, even stopped down. But this will not be much of an issue on the M8. It's a very characterful lens.

True, except for the early versions from the 1940s, the 28/3.5 made in Contax/Nikon mount, and the famous bayonet-mount 50/0.95.

Hi Nico, I use this lens on my M6 with a cheap chineese made LTM-M adaptor. People say be careful with chinese made ones but I did not have any problems so far.

I love that lens because of the already stated reasons. You may check my gallery for very recent results I got. Enjoy.

Thanks a lot everyone for the help.
I found a few of this lens on ebay, however the price seems to be a bit steep now.
Some were asking for $600, and other were asking even for $700.
I heard that some forum users, once got this lens for only $400.
Does any one know how much this lens usually go for?

Oh, and I love the the famous bayonet-mount 50/0.95 too but is really hard to find one in M mount though. Most of this lens needs modification to M mount to make it happen on our M cameras.
And this lens is offcourse, very expensive. I think I will be happy enough if I can find the right Canon 50mm f1.2

cheers,

Nico

Prices are all over the place, from $250 to $600. Condition figures into it. Watch out for etched glass on the surfaces on each side of the aperture blades.

It fits the CL as shown here, and it will fit the M6:
