I had no idea there was one until spotting this ad:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-7-Ran...789763143?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item4ab08f5447
It looks like one sold somewhat recently on ebay for just over $300.
I'm not on the market for one, but... what is this lens? A sonnar?

I remember reading somewhere that these were only sold in Japan. They appear on eBay from time-to-time. The few Flickr examples I can find with it look very good - not surprising as I find all the Canon lenses good to outstanding.

Well-known
A 5-elements Gaussian type.
This was a good deal, the lens is worth 400 USD alone.
The 50/2.2. is an amazingly compact lens. Even smaller than a collapsible Summicron. Excellent lens as all Canon RF lenses released in the time since 1959.
It was sold less than a year in Japan as a starter kit lens (like the 50/2.8 Tessar type) for the Canon P. Discontinued for unknown reasons, probably because no real costs difference to the 50/1.8. The 50/2.8 could be build cheaper.

Sorry to unearth an ancient thread, but has anyone got any more info on this 50mm f/2.2 Canon - any definitive source of info, even a book anyone could point me too ...?

Peter Kitchingman's book on Canon Rangefinder lenses. As good as it gets. You can buy direct through him.
