Hey all,

Ive just shot a job today and to my horror my 5D mk ii seems to only be capable of shooting JPEG, all of my .CR2 files have only got their name saved and windows cant recognise ANY further details -even file size.

I shot on three seperate cards and it is all the same, I know im likely not getting them back but the camera continues to do this even now. Ive taken out the batteries, tried changing cards, set it to RAW only and had to no avail. Its running the latest Firmware on the camera and im importing using the latest version of lightroom.

Has anyone got any idea as to what is going on here and how to fix it as I am currently editing on JPEGS to get these images to the client and need this camera running for later this week?

Are you using a cable to the camera, or using a card reader? I've had trouble with my 60D corrupting files when trying to download through a cable from the camera. I switched to using a card reader, and have not had the issue since. What I found before was once the file is corrupted, it's gone. They get mangled so bad no utility I tried could get them back.

ps somehow downloading through the cable can screw up the file on the card, since I couldn't even read them with the card reader if I had tried the cable first.

I am using a cable as I don't own a CF card reader, I'll try a CF card reader in future I guess. And yeah I know the files are as good as gone - just trying to pull as much as possible out of the jpegs

Why downloading through the cable messes up files on the card is an enduring Canon mystery, for me. I would think the camera reads the card, sends the info down the wire, and the data on the card should still be there untouched. Somehow, strange as it seems, that is not the case. It messes with the little I know about the digital sciences.

If you havent reformatted the cards, go buy a card reader or borrow one from a friend, and redownload them. You might have usable files if you try that
