Hello. I started noticing a few lightleaks on negatives a long time ago. Then it got worse and worse. I took the cover off so I can see what's the problem. Seems like the second curtain does not travel all the way to the first one leaving a tiny (sometimes a huge) gap in between. What would you suggest to do or to not do? 🙂
THANKS

P.S. Here's a little video about my shutter problem.

Hi!

I watched your video, and I noticed that the 2nd curtain's ribbons are slack after the shutter is released. Insufficient tension? You indicated that this condition came on gradually. I wonder if the problem is simply that of the 2nd curtain having lost tension slowly over a period of time. I'm not familiar with how the tensions are set in a Canon 7, but is it possible that the adjustment slipped?

Something else I wonder about is if the 2nd curtain roller's movement is being hindered by the connection to the slow speed escapement. Is it stopping when the vertical pin that's on top of the intermediate wheel contacts the slow speed escapement?

Generally, it seems that something is preventing the 2nd curtain's tension roller from traveling all the way.

Hey guys. Thanks for the tips. I cleared and then lubed the slow speed escapement, but it worked just partially and the shutter was still a bit stucked. Shutter ribbons were very very loose as GMOG pointed out. So I decided to increase the tension on the second curtain. Seems like it paid off and the shutter is closing all the way. I can even see that the pallet control gear that dxq.canada mentioned is revolving all the way. But now it seems like the shutter is not opening at 1/500 and 1/1000 speeds at all. I might just increased the pressure by too much. Its my first attempt to repair a camera and I think I made a mistake. Now I am waiting for shutter tester to arrive so I can take a time and adjust the times correctly. Wish me luck 🙂 I will update you as I progress, but it take like 3weeks for shutter tester to arrive.

THANKS YA'LL

Quick update. I managed to adjust the speeds, but now I am dealing with a shutter bounce. It is visible both on high speed camera and on my shutter tester. Therefore I need to fix it, but i don't know what to look for in the camera. I google Leica M system, but it seems like it's different from the Canon 7 and I am having hard time locating this brake mechanism.

I am posting this shutter speed graph for people that will find this tread in the future and for those who might find it helpful diagnosing shutter bounce. Btw. camera was set to 1/1000s

Quick update: Seems like after I tuned springs properly that almost all shutter bouncing is gone. There is a little bounce on 1/1000th speed, but I need to test it with film inside. Overall I must say that cocking lever feels smoother and quieter. Even firing is waaay quieter than before. Let's see what film will show us.
