why has this such a dud?
no one seems to even mention it...
i would think it would be a hit...small, mirrorless, interchangable lenses...
it has no built in finder much like my rx100...have to use the rear lcd...
anyone use one?

Because no thought was put into it, bad canon, bad Canon!

Maybe Canon thought too much about it.
Seeing the reviews they came quite close, but they didn't succeed. Maybe the next one will be better?

Too late coming to the party with nothing special.
Are you sure it's a complete dud? I heard it did ok in Japan.

Probably just ok. Kai (not sure about spelling) of digital rev slammed it then did a second video where he said not that bad. Hmmmmmm..
From my perspective, I think they designed a mirrorless solution that would not eat into the dslr sales...

very slow autofocus, that was enough for me to move on.

Never used one, but there just does not seem to be any point to it. I mean, what is the big compelling reason to buy?

All that, and a lens line-up that's even more sparse than the initial one of Sony's nex.

I already have a Sony Nex 5, but I really wish I could get that Canon 22mm/2. Several tests on the internet say it's quite excellent with a really small size and decent speed.

mee-too mirrorless. other brands had already established market share long before Canon chose to join.

Right, they came to the party too late, wearing blue jeans and sneakers, carrying a half full case of generic supermarket beer and no women.

Hahahaha, that's awesome.Right, they came to the party too late, wearing blue jeans and sneakers, carrying a half full case of generic supermarket beer and no women.
I just don't see anything particularly compelling about this camera. As a matter of fact, I'd rather have an Olympus E-PL1 or Panasonic GF1 for a significantly cheaper price, even if the image quality isn't as good. The u4/3rds lens lineup is awesome.

I read the reviews - I was a potential customer as already invested in Canon DSLR lenses. The EOS M would have made a good family shooter/backup camera (same sensor/colour characteristics), except... slow AF, basic control interface, no VF, and no lens roadmap of compact primes that I've seen.. even Sony has more if you include the Sigma lenses.
Slow AF kills it as a moving-kids-camera and as a street camera. Advanced shooters want quick control with dedicated buttons. I haven't heard anything about an EVF.
No deal. Bad Canon.
Nikon isn't doing any better. Only Sony NEX and Micro-4/3 seem to have grasped the idea of compact system cameras that can share lenses with bigger brothers.
If Sony releases a very compact FF interchangeable lens NEX like the RX1 then Canikon might regret short-changing their customers with crippled features or sensor sizes.

Quite a few "duds" you don't hear much about. Pentax K-01, the Q, Samsung and maybe the Nikon A. It is a crowded marketplace. The Cream rises to the top.

What I expected from Canon was a compact body that had more direct control. Maybe they will release an advanced model later. But meanwhile the market has matured and they are latecomers. One read of Ken Rockwell's review put me off!

Well, I read several reviews and they all said that the AF was lousy and the user interface liveable without being good.
It took Sony some time, but even my original 5 with the latest firmware (5) is a very good camera. The user interface really is good thanks to the fact that you can assign functions to buttons. Even if the menu system in so-so, if you set the camera up to your liking it is a good camera. Now I have the Sigma 19mm, Sigma 30mm and the Sony 50mm, I have a very competent set.
Canon should have learned from the mistakes made by Sony, but probably they were afraid of cannibalising their entry level DSLR's. So, they brought us a camera that seems not good enough - too bad

They were not even using the new G1X sensor in it but the old 18MP that haunted the entire Canon APS-C line for the past 3 years. That means subpar performance comparing the other offerings of the current generation.
The overall design is very conservative, as many had said above: nothing special, with slow AF.
Both the body and the kit lens are very well built even by RFF standard though.

those cameras get discounted around here for sub 400.-$ with lens and goodies, would make like a nice travel camera, the real bargain for an aps-c sensor of this quality, but does the thing adapt M-mount lenses
