Canon LTM Canon f/0.95 in M-mount: what's a fair price?

Ok, so last Friday I was over at my boss' desk asking a question about something or rather. Then, I looked over and there amongst the clutter was a Canon 50mm f/.95 just sitting there. Shocked and amazed, I reached over, removed the rear cap and found that it had been converted to m-mount. I asked my boss about it and apparently, he had received it for free from someone that wanted to change it to Nikon F mount so it could be used (via an adapter) on Arri PL mount. I guess, he couldn't get the back focus quite right so it has just been sitting there.

So, the deal is, I want to buy it. There are some minor coating scratches and I haven't yet developed my test pics from it yet, but I am wondering what a fair price for such a lens would be.

What do you think? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
Good point, but I am afraid that I have already shown my hand a little - my eyes couldn't help but light up when I saw it.

I have a few of things going for me:
1. My boss is nice.
2. He got it for free.
3. He doesn't seem to know much about this lens.
4. It isn't being used at all.

But, on the other hand, he is a savvy businessman and would probably like to make some money off of it.

Hmmm...

Anyone have any experience with this lens in m-mount?

Yikes. That's what I was worried about. That's a bit more than I can afford at this point. Hopefully, he doesn't know this info.
 
Don't forget, you have to subtract something for the coating problems, which could cause some flare, at least. Also, keeping a valued employee happy and contented :angel:

Actually, if he got it for free, he should be willing to sell for a few hundred, or so. Ideally, he may just pass it on. In any case, you've learned that eagerness doesn't make negotiating easier. Gotta watch that light in your eyes...

Well, problem solved, I asked my boss if he would sell it to me and he said "no." Oh well. Since we don't have the proper mount on the collimator or projector at work, it was decided that I could take the lens until next week and do some tests on it.

It looks so big my Zeiss Ikon.

Will post some test pictures when I finish a roll.

Very excited to see the results. Anyone have any pictures to whet my appetite?

So true. When I asked my boss if he was willing to sell, after replying "no," he replied, tongue-in-cheek, "what are you going to offer me $5, $10?"

He's savvy. I have many lessons to learn.
 
I have my 0.95, as well as a personal version of the conversion and routinely switch the lens back and forth between my M6 and 7s, simply changing the mount back and forth.

One of the problems that I have with a number of the conversions is that the change is permanent and pretty well disfigures the backside of the lens..... not a good thing to me.

You can make your own mod by simply modifying an adapter for LTM to M mount for the 50mm lens. Remove the flange, correctly measure the backfocus location and put in 3 small setscrews.

Changing back and forth then becomes a simple exercise of removing screws, changing mounts and tightening screws. The lens retains its integrity and you still have many options open.

The total cost of my conversion was <$50.00 and took less than 3 hours to do.

To your point, I wouldn't part for my adaptable 0.95 for less than $2.5k. .... Maybe not even for that....it is such a cool lens and .....Nah, not even for that.

That's a lot of dough.

I understand your appreciation of the lens, but damn, that figure makes me think I need to start going to nightschool so I can get some doctor cash.

It does sound interesting. Most of the conversions that I see use the TV version, adding an M focusing cam to the back of the lens. I would not want this done, either. This reversible conversion of yours would be the best of 2 worlds.

On the other hand, using the lens on a 7s(or the later z) is a very viable alternative. These are wonderful cameras, and are extremely well built. I'd be interested in hearing from a repairperson who has experience with both early Leica M and late Canon RF.
