Paul,
That is a good system. I can account for all 35 years of my Minolta Hi-Matic 9 camera, kept in a case and repaired twice in its life. The Hi-Matic E I got lucky on.
I had an Nikon S2 that had a similar problem to what you describe: It turns out that the last person to take the lens mount off did not replace all of the Shims that set the flange-to-film distance. I used the opportunity to re-shim it for the Zeiss Sonnar. I discovered the Canon 7 uses a shim under the mount. It is a ring of thin brass.
I have a "parts" Canonet 28; I am going to play with it in a similar fashion; see how hard the lens barrel is to go back on.

My Hi-matic 9 does perfectly fine with a flash at f11, so I suspect that there is a little play in the lens mount that is causing the problem.

From the Minolta Hi-Matic 9; taken in about 1972 of my Sister with her son JJ at Christmas. This is one of my favorite shots of the two. Taken with an old fixed-output electronic flash using the "easy-Flash" System; it beat my Argus/Cosina STL1000 anytime indoors. Kodachrome II; scanned with an almost as old Microtek 1850 three-pass slide scanner.
I still have and use this camera; I used it on Christmas with Nikki and it still delivers just-as-sharp pictures. It sits in a drawer next to the Black SP when not in use.

And one from the Minolta Hi-Matic E with its fixed-output Flash. Taken last Summer. This is with Color Film; ASA 200. Unlike ASA25 film, the aperture has really closed down. The Bar codes behind Nikki are readable at full resolution.

Great snap! I have a few taken with my Vivitar ES and a Minolta Electroflash 3, that employs the "easy-flash" system. They are so sharp. Really amazed at how sharp and accurate this lens is.
