Canon IV SB flash adapter

I vowed I would not fall in love with the little gem, acquired in a fit of GAS. Anyway, I bought for it a Canon-made (no. 1518) adapter for the flash rail. Except I can't figure out what it adapts to. It slides onto the rail, and has four rectangular holes on the opposite side, the lower pair labeled "SELF_EXT & TESTER". It is a little bigger in diameter than a 35mm film container. RFFers, I need your help!

So, I figured out that what I have is not "the" flash adapter for the rail, but can be used as such--but how do I find a cable that will mate this unit to a flash unit?

HI David, The Self extension adapter, alas is part of a complete Flash outfit. It came with the Main Unit Deluxe Flash model X and some other early outfits. It was used with the Canon Flash Tester and extension cords to the Side Lighting X unit. Look out for the Flash Tester as that is a real neat item and is quite handy to check the flash circuit system in your camera. Always had a soft spot for the Canon Flash outfits as they are beautifully made and presented. They date between 1950-1952. Peter

It converts to a normal "Edison" plug, quite common on early electronic flash, and old Graflex flash guns. Paramount Sync Cords can make a cord from that to anything.

Or, take it apart, drill a hole in it somewhere, and mount and wire in a normal PC flash socket. I did that on an off-brand one.
