Not really a question about the case. There is a a 4.5 X 7.5 cm card in a slot in the back of the original case. - and every case I've seen has one. Does anyone know what that card is intended for?

Thanks!

My card is completely blank, so I don't think it's a depth of field table. All the ones I've seen are blank and sort of a brownish red color.

A similar, but cream card arrived in the pocket of a Leica screw-mount camera case I bought a couple of years ago. Try writing on it in pencil.

I use mine for photographic notes. I believe cards like this were used for many years as "aides-memoire" (hope my spelling is correct).

Regards,
David

PS: I just went through the cases I have and found a Leica case with a card still in it, which is apparently a leather covered metal plate. It is the same colour you describe but though it looks as though it should be removable, it seems to be stuck and I haven't been able to pull it out yet. If yours is the same as mine, then I am as confused as you about its' purpose.

I just looked through my collection of Canon manuals, and didn't see any mention of the card, or the case for that matter. The case for my P doesn't have a card slot, so it's probably something that went out of vogue after the Barnack bodied models.

It small plate was more of a protection for the back of the bottom loaders as hit in that spot could damage the back or bend it inwards. The back loaders had the pressure plate for protection.
In my collection I found a Leica Standard which came from Krakow in Poland with a rail ticket in that pocket of the ERC dated 1939. It could tell a tale or two I guess.

I can relate to that; but why is the plate covered in leather and appears to be designed to be removed?

Re: the train ticket - have you researched it?

As you say, "it could tell a tale or two".
