Just received ivsb (user condition) with shutter holes. Didn't discover until I tested with film, so seller probably didn't know about problem. Hope this forum can answer some questions.

1. Can these shutters be repaired? If so, how?
2. Can they be replaced? Will Leica or FSU shutters match?
3. What will repair or replacement cost?
4. Who does this kind of work (and has parts)?

Thanks in advance.

1)Yes they can be repaired by curtain replacement or even DIY if the holes are not too numerous and large with flat black acrylic paint coats.

2) A Competent repair tech can make shutter curtains from stock material made for such purposes.

3) Cost depends on who does the repair and the nation that tech lives in.
A camera tech in Germany or Switzerland will usually charge more than one in Russia usually. 200 dollars in the USA or Canada is usually a good deal for such work, many shops charge much more.

4)Essex, DAG, Youxin Ye, Oleg, Luton Camera Repair, Karl Bryan etc. and any competent camera tech around the world plus this is a common repair so stock and some parts, which are not normally needed, are usually at hand .

I've used fabric paint on a Zorki shutter, and it was good for about three rolls. After that, the holes came back. They could have been new ones though, I didn't bother to compare frames from previous film.

I have repaired small holes in cloth shutters a couple times. I found the best material to be the best quality atrist's black acrylic paint you can find. This stuff is very thick, about like vaseline. I have not found fabric paint to be suitable for this job. This approach will only work if the holes are very small, and the curtains are not dried out or cracked.
Use the smallest amount you can, otherwise the curtain will lose flexibility. Just put it in the areas where the holes are. If there are very many holes, or the holes are large, it is unlikely that the curtain can be saved. Rub it into the cloth with a finger, with another finger behind the curtain. Rub it in hard to get it into the fibers. It may be useful to dilute it with a bit of water to make sure it will penetrate. No streaks or lumps- when it is dry, it should not be visible. I have a camera which I did this to five years ago, and there have been no problems.

Cheers,
Dez

1. Can these shutters be repaired? If so, how?

Yes they can. A repairman will have to disassemble the camera During this process he/she will clean and lube all part that need it.

2. Can they be replaced? Will Leica or FSU shutters match?

Since the OEM curtains are no longer made, the repairman will have to make new ones from shutter curtain material.

Never use pre-made FSU curtains. They are too thick.

3. What will repair or replacement cost?

I'm not sure but expect to pay around $200..

4. Who does this kind of work (and has parts)?

I would suggest Essex camera repair.. http://essexcamera.com/

Youxin Ye did a CLA and shutter curtain replacement on my IVsb. I am very pleased with the work...

Original quote was $150 (I brought the camera down - no shipping was involved). But I also needed CLA's on five LTM lenses. I had a second IVsb that I had purchased for parts, which came with a 50mm/1.8 lens that I already owned as well. I ended up trading the camera and lens for all the work that was done.
