Does anyone know what this lens generally goes for? there's one on eBay but it's in South Africa and is like 700 bucks...is this a normal price? It seems rather steep to me. I'm talking about the late kind that looks like the one in the pic below.
I'm trying to settle on an LTM tele with a nice big focus ring. I am seriously tempted by the black Canon 100/2, even though it's honking huge. The VC APO Lanthar is another possibility. I used to have a Jupiter-9 and am also considering just getting another of those, but I'd rather get something that's more likely to be properly aligned. I've got about $350.
Sorry for all the tele threads lately!

yeah, I think that $700 is kinda high for this lens. I would peg the pre-recession price at $500 to $600, have seen them sell on eBay for close to $400 recently.

The other great options in your price range are Nikkor 85/2 and 105/2.5, both classics.
Then there is the Heliar 75/2.5, a very cool lens, too.
All on my short list! I even considered a tele-Elmarit, though the LTM ones seem to be out of my price range. I'd get an M lens, but I want to use it on my Canon 7 as well as the M2 and R-D1.
I'm not sure if I'd like the ergonomics of the Nikkor 85/2, and I would love a black lens. But the images I've seen from the Nikkor are great.
I have a habit of going for the weird choice over the obvious...thus the Canon 100/2. There's a mint one on eBay at the moment.

The Tele Elmarit never came in LTM, only the v1 Elmarit did, and is basically unaffordable due to collectors value. The old Summicron 90/2 exists in screw mount, too, but also expensive.
Yes, sorry, I meant the 90/2.8 LTM Elmarit...

I saw that one too, and was surprised by the reasonable price from this seller- often I find their stuff to be 2x going rate.

geez, I have listed my unused 90/2.8 Elmarit in LTM a couple of times on eBay, and could never get past about $250 (I was holding out for $400). Mine is user condition, with nice clean glass, but missing a 2x4mm piece of vulcanite . Maybe I shoulda sold it...

Hi Folks
Just a heads up. I'm having a not so pleasant experience with that seller currently. He may resolve the issue but, be warned. The descriptions have some "non-disclosure" issues.

The CV APO-Lanthar 90/3.5 is a delightful little lens, abeit abit slow at f3.5. But the it is a very capable lens, everything that the J-9 isn't, very sharp with good contrast and excellent flare resistance. Unfortunately, I hardly use mine any more and have been thinking of selling it to help off-set the cost of my new Nokton 50/1.1.
I have a properly shimmed and aligned J-9 which I use regularly for portraits. Very sharp with low contrast and some veiling flare. Makes for a flattering portrait.

Thank you! It's hard to fudge "mint" but perhaps I will soon see...

OK, for what it's worth, I actually bought that 100/2. I know it's huge (twice the length and four times the weight of my Pentax 100/2.8), but after researching all my options and hearing how much people liked the images from this lens (better than the Summicron, etc.), I decided to go for it. Even though this "mint" copy obviously has a bumped/bent filter ring. f16sunshine, I'll let you know how it goes.
I'm kind of surprised how few photos with this lens are out there. Anyway, this will get my 7 out and about for a change, and I'll even give it a whirl on my other cameras. Go team!

Its a shame that the Canon SLR lenses do not attract the same sort of desire. I picked up an excellent condition Canon 85mm f1.8 in FL mount for about $50 on eBay. All Canon SLR lenses suffer from being incompatible with both later Canon mounts and those of other manufacturers so they are just not in demand even though being excellent glass.

Flim Forever!
That lens has been for sale for months(the canon 85/1.8 from S.Africa).

Peter,
The wide angle FL and FD can be used on Leica mount cameras with Adapter B. I like the 19mm 3.5FL.

I have lusted after FD and FL glass many times, and one of these days I'll pick up a Canon SLR on Craigslist or something. It really is a shame you can't use them on DSLR's. Perhaps this forthcoming Samsung EVIL will change that. In fact, maybe I should stock up...

There is a bargain condition Canon 100/2 for sale at keh for $310, so $370 for an "Ebay Mint" condition lens is probably decent price.

Yes, I have seen the BGN lens at KEH. It is a good deal.

Honking huge for a rangefinder lens and heavy at well over a pound. With hood, it blocks about 1/3 the viewfinder on a P.
Let me know if you need a hood for it. I've got a spare clamp-on T-60. I think it uses Series 8 filters.
The honkin' huge 100 shown with 100/3.5 and 50/1.8:

The last few I was looking at on ebay all ended above US$500. But I do think it's a great lens! And light too!

Congrats! I'm sure you'll like this lens. It takes a while getting used to it though.
As for photos, I've a few taken by this lens in my flickr account. Mostly tested at minimum focusing distance and at infinity. Check it out if you have the chance.

Thanks, benny--I checked out your pics. The bokeh is crazy smooth, I'm eager to try this one out! The f/3.5 lens photos also look spectacular.
