I have heard conflicting views, does the Jupter 12 fit the Canon P or are there major problems with the rear element of the len scraping the shutter etc. Thanks for any help/opinions

I don't know if it makes a difference but I have the black J-12 and it definitely fits the Canon-P. I was just using the combo last week.

It's difficult to say precisely. The black version is newer and it can be used with Canon P with some caution. I once tried the chrome version to my P and it very slightly touched the light baffles.

You might find more info under a search of this site for Canon P and J-12. This topic has come up a number of times and there are some conflicting views on this. Personally I have a black J-12 and it fits my Canon P.

Unless you already have the J12, I'd buy the Canon 35/2.8 for a few bucks more and be safe/ happy. The latter is a fine lens. 'just my 2 cents...

Although I'm happy with the optical performance of the J-12, I'm not so excited about the ergonomic design of the lens body.
The lens aperture scale is inside of the built-in lens hood. You have to look in front of the lens to change f stops. The aperture index is tough to see which I remedied my putting a small dab of acrylic red paint on it with a tiny pointed brush.
You have to attach the lens very carefully so as not to damage the Canon P's light buffer. Not good for quick lens change.

If I find a good condition and affordable Canon 35/2 or f2.8 I will get it.

Well, wait a minute. I'd agree with that, except I'd take issue with the definition of "few bucks more"! 🙂 Recently it seems the Canon 35/2.8 has been selling on eBay for more than USD 200, and sometimes in fact way more. See this recent one for USD 450! (Am I missing something? Is that particular example rare/special in some obscure way?) And KEH have a BGN-grade black one for USD 215 or EXC grade chrome for USD 349 at the moment. Whereas the black J12 can be had for less than USD 100 on eBay. The difference is more than a few, by me.

With some patience, the Canon 35/2.8 can be had for $150. Some have been in that range in the Classifieds. My chrome was $150, but that was a couple of years ago. It is near mint condition.

The J-12 is better when stopped down to F5.6 and F8.

These are with a 1960 J-12, perfect glass, on a Nikon S2. These shots are at F2.8.

I had a Serenar 35/2.8 from KEH rated Bargain for $150 a year or so ago. When I picked up the 35/2.0, it was time for the 2.8 to go, so I gave it to a friend. I was an excellent lens, but not as good as the 2.0, for my purposes.

And some of us click on "heads-up" Canon 35/2 with m-adapter for $125 when posted...

The haze cleaned out of it quickly.

A 35/2.0 can run double the cost of the 35/2.8 in my experience. If I EVER see one at $150 or less, it will be mine before anyone notices. I paid near $300 for my 2.0 last year, from jiri_e on ebay - and considered it a bargain!

If the prices on this lens have dropped, please, do not tell me! The pain would be too great. I am forever paying too much for an item at a point that seems to be 2 months before the bottom falls out and everyone starts giving them away.

In my opinion prices of Canon lenses, at least those of 50mm and below have increased lately. A nice 35mm/2 or 35mm/1.8 sell easily up to $350-400 level these days. A good 50mm/1.4 is $500 and above and the 50mm/1.2 sells for even more.

Indeed some of the prices of all sorts of 35s have been scaring me lately, to the point where I even thought about bidding on this obscure Soligor 35/3.5 last week that went for USD 182. This was a listing that made me do a double-take and say "A WHAT?!", because I knew Soligor only as a maker of third-party SLR lenses in the '70s and '80s. I think I had an 80-200 zoom from them on a Canon AE-1 20+ years ago. I did not know they were making RF lenses in 1957 (as the JCII sticker date says), and was unable to find much information out there about this model. I decided to pass on it, figuring it's safer to get a known quantity (even if known to be not fabulous, such as an old Elmar) if I can be patient enough to find one closer to USD 200.

Don't overlook the Canon 35/1.8 either. It usually sells for less than the 35/2 and I found it to be a good lens. The shots at the maritime museum in my gallery and Picassa web site are using one.

I'm going to need to get seriously cheap (again 🙁 ) so if any of you are getting rid of a J-12 in LTM for cheap, let me know!

Agreed. One of the reasons I chose Canon P against a M2 was the more friendly pricing of Canon LTM lenses compared to M-lenses. You can still buy the Canon 50mm/1.8 or the 100mm/3.5 for $150 but for a nice 35mm there's no other economical option out there than the J-12.

The Voigtländer Skopar 35/2.5 would be a good choice.
I am happy to own both, the Canon 35/2 and the Voigtländer.
I tested them (on my P!) and found them to be equally sharp,
the Voigtländer giving a bit more contrast. Question of taste...
And it's fun to use!
Payed €130 for mine, second hand like new.
