Canon P boing boing?

Dear Canon-P-experts

I just got a test roll back and to my horror I see this!

I had the same in a few shots at 1/1000, not every time, and ok at other speeds. Tested with 2 different lenses.

My new old Canon 50/f1.8's looking sharp! but the P body is grumbling.

Does this look more like bouncing, or capping, and is there a screw somewhere I could twiddle to fix it? I'm not even sure I'd know how to test if it's fixed. Any pointers?

I think more like bouncing - the shutter is rebounding when it is supposed to stop, and giving that edge an extra exposure.

The brake mechanism needs to be adjusted to work properly. I don't know how to do it on a Canon, I'd probably start looking for repair manuals.

Any chance that it is a light leak? Does it go beyond the image area?

The effected area is over 1/3 of the frame: either a lot of bounce, shutter dragging, or light leak.

It only showed in 5 pics out of 36

All problem shots at f2.8, 1/1000 (which seems to be the common factor) although I did get some good shots at this combination.

using two different lenses including the repaired HC.

And no, the tractor wasn't in all of the problem shots.

Looks like a light leak.

It needs a CLA. I'd send it to Don Goldberg. He's working on my IIIf for a similar problem.

Looks like a light leak to me, too. However, before sending it out, I'd check the light seals near the backdoor hinges (those seals can be fixed pretty easily w/some new flocking/foam).

How does the camera sound. Could it be that the second curtain is slowing down or stalling at the end of the exposure.

The camera sounds ok, I don't notice anything strange in the sound.
I made a couple of hundred 1/1000 exposures without film, noticed once in a while it didn't cock completely and i'd have to wind again a smidgen.

I'll check the seals. The fact that I didn't get it every shot, and the fact that the bands are different widths made me think shutter rather than leak, but it's definitely worth checking before opening the camera or sending for a cla.

I'm most of the way through my first roll of portra, avoiding 1/1000 lets see how it goes.

I'll post a shot or two and update.

I"ll bet on light leak, too, given the uniform sharpness from corner to corner and same pattern of overexposure on each frame. Have you tried shooting in the shade or with the camera back covered?
