How is the lever on these cameras put back on properly? I went to exchange levers only to find that looks aside on the outside they are not interchangeable.
Oh, good question and I hope someone gives us an answer. I was planning to take my Canon 7 wind lever off too. It isn't positioned correctly and I was hoping to put it back in proper orientation.
My experience with this kind of stuff is usually: Try, try again. Repeat.
I owned both Canon P and Canon 7 before. The levers look very similar, but if you look closely they are not the same. I haven't taken them apart so I can't tell if they are interchangeable but what I can tell from my eye inspection the sizes / shapes of them are slightly different.
When you remove the lever, the mechanism will turn a fraction more, so the lever will not fit back on. Turn the lever around backward (so it will engage the square shaft) then wind the self timer about 1/3 of a turn. Quickly turn the lever around and set it on before the mechanism unwinds fully. Then replace the retaining screw. I have overhauled many of these cameras, 2 today, as a matter of fact, and did this very job twice.
