Folks,
I got the Canon P delivered today. I am pretty happy with it and the transaction.
It's not perfect but it ain't horrible either!
Couple of things about it that I need some help with, though.
The self timer doesn't work. Is that a problem for the rest of the camera?
The shutter fires and sounds about right at all the speeds--I'll know better when I get some film back from it--but there is a "bouncing" sound after the shutter fires with the slow(below 1/30) speeds. Is this normal?
The frame lines are visible though I do need to move my eye around the frame to see all th 35mm line. I wear glasses and figured that would be the case.
I gently tried my Jupiter-12 lens and it isn't going to fit this camera🙁 .
I'd like to find something similar that will fit on the P. I prefer the vintage lenses so the obvious choice(the CV 35) probably won't be what I get--in fact when I sold the Bessa R, I included that lens. What do you fine folks suggest I should consider?
A CLA and maybe some new leather(just for looks--it doesn't need it)
and I'll really be loving this baby!
I did get the original manual with this one, but any thing else I should keep in mind when I'm using it?
Thanks, all!
Rob

re: self timer - shouldn't be an issue.

re: bouncing sound - yes that's normal - the mechanical timing escapement.

re: framlines - yup, that's my eyglass experience too - I just estimate unless it's critical (which it rarely is)

re: jupiter 12 - I'm told the later manufactur black lenses will fit. I happen to love the CV ultron 35 1.7, but I also like my tiny Canon 35 3.2

Enjoy - I love these cams.

Second on the Canon 35 2.8. Canon LTM lenses seem to be rather easy to find and are affordable. When I bought my Canon L1 as a package deal, it came with a 35, 50, 85, and 135. I used the 135 once, but I've used the others quite a bit more and I like them very much. It's also a wonderful treat to find them with their original leather cases. My 85 and 135 have theirs.
Do you routinely get newly acquired cameras CLAd? If it's working fine, why bother? Save the money for a lens.
These later screwmount Canons are very elegant and extremely usable. Enjoy it!

Canon made 2 fine lens for their rf cameras the 35mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2. There were a couple of others but they are somewhat difficult to find because of their collector value. Performance wise they do not compare to the above lens.

I have the 35mm f/2 and have found it to be an outstanding performer on a par with my Leica Summicron 35mm lens..

Thanks, gents!

Not normally, no. This camera, however, may have an RF issue. The seller described it as, "The rangefinder is slightly off. May need an adjustment." It came with a very nice looking Jupiter-3 lens. Given the J-3's notorious reputation, I figure it's an even bet whether the RF is off, the lens is off, or both.🙄 I have a good lens line up and I will be seeing what I can see with those good lenses. Depending on what the film shows, I will know if I need to get this dealt with or not. And while it might not need the "A" of CLA, it sure could use the "C"😀 !
try to find a canon 35/2.8 if you don't need really fast.
it's a wonderful vintage lens.
Foe the 35mm lens, I've been happy with the f2.8 of the Jupiter so fast isn't a requirement.
Something with a easily found filter size will be useful, though!

The old Canon 2.8 will takes 34mm filters, not bad no? 😉
Not the easiest but not too awful. I have a nice Canon 34mm yellow filter I got from joe a while back.🙂 It's been on the Seagull TLR I have.

I have both the Canon 35mm/2.8 and 35mm/1.8. Both are very sharp and small. The 35mm/2.8 is one my favorite RF lenses.

Most Canon 35/2.8's use 34mm filters, but the relatively rare late black/chrome one uses 40mm filters.

My 35mm f/2 Canon lens uses the 40mm filters. A fine lens I might also add.

I ended up getting step up rings for most of mine - up to 40.5 so I didn't need to have 3 sets of filters in the bag. On the 35 the rings act as a built in lens hood as a bonus.

I have the original 40mm Canon series VI adapter with hood that I use on the 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/1.8 lens. My 100mm f/3.5 uses the 34mm adapter which is also a series VI. The 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/3.5 lens use the 50mm adapter (48mm screw-in filters) which takes series VII filters.

This way I only need series VI and VII filters..

I've recently sold off my Canon P - wonderful camera. (Just wanted to try something else.)

The bouncing sound is normal and the 35mm framelines are indeed waaaay out towards the edges of the viewfinder. The rangefinder on mine was off when I got it - rather than fix it myself, I sent it to Essex Camera for a CLA. ($159). I understand the rationale about not CLA'ing a camera as soon as you get it, but I like to...just personal preference.

All of the suggested lenses above work well - I have the Canon 35/2 which I love. (It is at Sherry Krauter's at the moment.) All of the mentioned Canons are tiny and a good fit for the P.

I just received my canon P with a 50mm f1.4 lens. KEH purchase. They claimed it was ex. Other than the crinkled shutter looks LN to me. Anyway, I have a few questions for those of you who use this camera. I got the Bell & Howell/Canon filter. There is no exterior threads to screw in a filter and the 48mm cap does not fit over the filter (over the lens yes) Do you use it without a sunshade? Did it have a push on cap? Was there a sunshade made for it? Has anyone tried it with the Voigtlander VC II? Thanks for any info. (There's nothing on the net. & nothing in the Canon book)

Is the bell and howell/canon 1-A filter defective in any way. And, the s50 canon shade is that an old item, I presume, or a recent product that just happens to fit?

the filter is fine.
in the old days the shades were clamp on and the filters only had one set of threads.
the hood is from the old days too.
can be found on ebay, or maybe ask here in a wtb ad. expect to pay between 15 and 25 bucks.
