Just went through some of his instagram photos and I'm impressed.
 
OK, the safety yellow is nothing like my favorite color but, looking at the photos and looking at the photos by the guy doing the work (on instagram as referenced above), I think the actual paint job is pretty good. I disagree with painting the leather as well as the metal and if I were to really want a repainted camera I would consider something from him.

it's great that someone is now repainting cameras speculatively instead of always doing a custom order (besides gold plated zorkis). i think this is a new development that's a good sign for the film renaissance.

Are you able to say who you got it from? I was wondering about a black P from Taiwan but had my doubts. The pictures from the cited guy marc_gogogo appear to show cameras being stripped to bare metal which is normally a good sign (many of the black Kievs are just paint on Chrome and they peel within days) as I found.

Cameraworks, who use gun paint, claim that a few months is needed for full hardening.

Clearly someone simply applied a spray can of auto body paint to "everything". Its low quality for sure -- look at the paint flaking off already on the door hinge. Its wanton waste and ethically distasteful and disturbing.

Note that I don't have any problem with repainting a camera if that's what somebody wants, and if that somebody wants fluorescent yellow, that's also perfectly fine (I think Devin made an orange Leica). But this is a speculative trashing. I wonder if the leatherette/vulcanite covering will survive? Probably, the paint will just flake off in a few weeks anyway.

I also wonder about the person who would want this unfortunate thing. I mean, really? :confused:

Am I stating the obvious??? Sorry folks :eek:
 
Brightly colored cameras seem to be pretty popular in Japan.

This yellow Canon P screams "Look everyone, I'm so hip with this retro film camera."

I can vouch for the superficial paint job. Last year I bought a Canon P from Taiwanese eBay seller Shueido Studio that was touted as an immaculate black repaint with full CLA. In fact, if you hop onto eBay now you will see that almost all of these repaints are sold by Shueido.

When it arrived, the Canon P certainly looked amazing. Hence why the images on the eBay listing are so tempting. But at first touch all was revealed. The black paint is a kind of thin matt coating over the top of the chrome. No chrome has been removed to reveal the base level brass or aluminium chassis like should be done in pro paint jobs. The paint was already peeling around any area that had texture or ribs such as the dials, frames around the RF windows, levers, etc. I realised pretty quickly that if I took the camera out for a spin even for a single afternoon then it would end up looking tatty, and far, far from that classic brassed Leica look. Hell, if I wanted a camera that flakes and peels paint every time you even thought about touching it, I could just take acrylic paint to it myself and not fork over AU$450 for what I thought was a pro repaint. Or my five year old son could paint it.

To their credit, after dragging their feet a little, Shueido gave me a full refund as per their terms on eBay, though of course it cost me AU$70 to send it back to Taiwan with registered shipping.

It was only later when I was browsing Canon P reprints on Instagram that I came across marc_gogogo whose repaints looks exactly like the one I had purchased. Additionally, if you go back further into his IG account you will see that he often flies to Taipei with suitcases full of gear, pre and post repaint. He very likely works with Shueido given the quantity of repainted gear they both seem to traffic in. True detectives may wish to match serial numbers.

This was my experience. YMMV. Some of his Instagram images seem to show that he now possibly does dechrome bodies before applying paint. But given that other reputable companies like Kanto in Japan will charge you thousands for a Leica strip and repaint (not hundreds), I wonder if his process is legit given the relative low cost. I am not disparaging his work or process - there seems to be a market for everything - nor do I know any of this as fact. All I can do is speculate based on what I experienced and have seen online.

Anyway, these yellow and pink and cherry and black repaints can possibly make sexy shelf queens, but I warn you against putting your paws on them: they will likely flake like a dessicated eucalyptus tree trunk during a summer bushfire (free Australian similie for you).
 
Aside from the hideous repaint, I'd be concerned that the quality of the claimed CLA by anyone prepared to do it would be highly suspect.
 
They probably shouldn't call it "Mint." I don't think the word should be used with any repaint, let alone one of that color! If it's repainted, then it isn't the way it left the factory, so how can it be mint condition? "Mint" is supposed to refer to a coin still in the same condition as when it left the mint, right? So applied to a camera, it should have the same meaning.

I was checking out the guys IG and it obvious he is using both electrolysis and blasting. All the work on his IG looks legit. Definitely not “drop paint” jobs with rattle cans.

Camera repaint cost so much because there’s only a handful of people around the world who are both interested and skilled enough to perform them.

The Canon P is already affordable. He slaps some paint on and gets nearly 3x the regular chrome price. Seems like a solid way to eat.

Particularly like the Plum FM3A and the Green S2
 
^^^ But Devin, Given the # of hours and effort necessary to do a proper repaint, don't you find it suspicous the low-ish prices? I think you have a better feeling for this than most of us.

Of course I don't know for sure, but the already flaking paint on that dayglo camera doesn't scream "quality". Its just sitting there and the paint is already falling off. Hmmm. Painted over leatherette doesn't scream quality either.

Possible that he does two tiers of repaints? One done properly, and the other half-*ss?

I appreciate a classy repainted camera as much as the next guy/gal, but not shoddy and gaudy. The latter is obviously in the eye of the beholder.
 
A bit off topic but I bought some replacement Contax II/III leather from Aki-Asahi recently. As is often the case they gave me an extra to practice with; IT WAS TARTAN!

Tartan leatherette on a lime green Contax, SOUNDS GOOOOOD!

He seems to be cullling them in good sized batches. That definitely helps keep the time down. The paint booth he has is a pretty nice unit as well. I like his little blasting cabinet although I would try not to blast a camera part myself. To much localized heat is created in my experience.

If he spends anywhere near the time I have.. the camera is basically free at those prices. Lol

I’ve never made a dime worth counting off painted cameras. I’ll do it for fun or a case
of beer! Actually wish I had local “camera friends” who could drop by and bug me in the shop for a quick chrome and nickel strip, a joint, and a few brews! That’s living the good life in my eyes!

I have two cameras on my list to paint. After that I’ll likely dispose of my chemistry kit.
I have also offered to do the pesky stripping for members. I wouldn’t mind putting together a batch soon!

Actually! Gonna start a thread right now!
 
You see, the purpose of this camera isnt to use - its to green screen something more expensive onto it so you can feel better about yourself :p
