Canon P rewind crank repair

My rewind crank has a loose handle, it sticks up slightly when down in it's slot in the closed position. It sometimes catches on things and pops up, a loose spring I assume?

I have the repair manual from Pentax-Manuals but it is hard to see detail. I have removed the set screw on the fork part inside the film chamber but it has no effect, the fork acts as though the set screw is still in. do I have to take the top off to get at the rewind crank parts? There is nothing on the internet on how to get at the handle. I have seen the camera with the top off but no explanation on what to do with the handle.

I beleive the fork unscrews after the set screw is removed. Once the fork unscrews you should be able to remove it. There may be a spring which also holds it in coming from the side of the body that fits into a groove in the rewind post.

It's been awhile since I was in a P though.

I tried that. I removed the set screw, it (the fork) spins freely a half turn then stops. I tried an object in the fork and unscrewing it. no go, I didn't want to force it. In the handle closed position, it spins freely, this is by design, in the handle open position, it catches after a half turn so it can rewind the film. I just can't see why removing the set screw has no effect on removing it. why the heck even have a set screw if it doesn't do anything

*CU019A is the assembled unit and is secured to the body with three (2) screws. There is a lever to engage/disengage the rewind process (part C2155) together with a screw and spring. In the diagram the assembled unit and the engage/disengage bits are toward the right side half way down on Sheet No. 9... the exploded view is to the upper right of the assembled unit (on the extreme right side upper of Sheet No. 9).

The exploded view of *CU019A (the assembled unit) as mentioned above is shown to the upper right side of Sheet No. 9. Please note that there are five (5) screws that hold the unit together... four (4) holding the "Rewind Crank Handle" to the "Rewind Knuckle" and one that pins the "Rewind Shaft (A)" to the "Rewind Fork".

There might be some bonding agent in the mix...

I did a field repair of the rewind crank on a Nikon F3P with only a pocket knife after the crank snapped off in sub-zero weather... There is almost nothing more simple (the rewind) on an old manual camera (once you have seen it apart one time)... Have fun...

Shimokita, so I'm seeing that I DO need to take the top off to get at the handle assembly. I was hoping I didn't as it looks harder than usual. (my RF/VF is like new so no need to take it off to clean) and also I've heard both ways that you must take the handle off to get the top off and that you can get the top off without removing the handle so I am confused.

You can definitely remove the top plate without removing the rewind crank, just have to lift up the crank and the cover can be moved to go around it. the set screw is the only thing stopping you from unscrewing the fork off.

I will have one coming in to replace my broken one sometime this month. It took quite a long time to find a complete assembly and the person as known on Ebay, Nobbysparrow had one pulled from a parts camera. My old one, once out I will take it apart along with photos, step by step telling you what had to be removed it that may help. :bang:

Life saver! This works. I managed to get the plate off (Canon VI same as the P in build) to clean the viewfinders.
50mm prism is quite far gone with haze, frame lines are all but invisible 🙁 Gave it all a clean anyways.
