I think at one time there was a web site with serial numbers and corresponding years of production based on that number. I can't locate it any more. Does any one remember this, or was I having a vivid dream?

OR, is someone can tell me production year for a Canon P Ser # 7148xx I will be very grateful.

a 1959 production

Spot on Xayraa33 with the 1959 date but from my database I could narrow it down to July/August 1959. If it has a CL 50mm f/1.8 lens attached then it should be in the serial # range between #250xxx and #260xxx.

Thanks for the added info, but I'm not sure the lens it shipped with was original to the camera. 1959 is close enough. I was 10 when it was made!

Jim,

I have two P's and two M's. This is for me the best of both worlds.
The "World of P"and the "World of M".

"I used to have two, too..."

I have the P that split off, and it has a freshly cleaned viewfinder, so it is even more gorgeous than before. Serial No. 731884.

How about P bodies with numbers:

7267xx and 7736xx.

thanks

HI Raid, If the P have lenses attached then it is easier to work out roughly what months the camera were manufactured in. My database on lens serial numbers I have been keeping for nigh on 10 years so it does help. You can also work it out from my book if you think the lens is the original lens that came with the camera. At the moment I am recording lens/camera combinations if I think they are the original combination and from this I should be able to work out the batches the camera were produced in. Fills in time I suppose....peter

Hi Peter,
I never know which lens comes with which camera since I rotate lenses from camera to camera over the years. Thanks for the tips, though.

Mine is #714099!

I use my 50mm f/1.8 database to sort it out.

OK lets see #714099 should have a B&W ASA disc on the back door and a T5 or T6 50m lens in the serial # range between #250xxx and #265xxx. Made sometime between May 59 and July 59.

Raids P both should have coloured ASA dials, with #7267xx produced in 10/60-12/60 with a T6 50mm lens between #270xxx and #275xxx. #7736xx is a quite a late model P,would have a [TE] in the accessory shoe and be issued sometime between Feb 61 to June 61 and may have a T7 50mm lens attached.

OK to much time but it beats watching the idiot box. Peter

Peter is good in what he knows about Canon!
My 7267xx P has a color dial, and it has E-P on the flash accessory shoe. The 7736xx is black-painted in Japan, and it does have TE on the flash accessory shoe and color dial.

Thank you, Peter.

I'm glad you're liking it. I actually miss the Industar more than the P. I should have kept it! The P I have left is still good, but sits on a shelf more than it should.

A Black P? Original or a repaint? Can I see, please? Must be great.
